Welcome Back to School
Dear Parents and Guardians of the Washington Unified School District,

I trust this message finds you and your families well and enjoying this beautiful summer. I see many students and families shopping for school supplies anticipating the start of school.  I am looking forward to seeing your children on the first day of school and am very excited for an outstanding school year ahead.

Our first day of school is Wednesday, August 17, 2016.  Principals have sent letters home with more information about your specific school.  Our teachers and school staff are already preparing their classrooms and materials to welcome your children to another exciting school year.

Our Dual Immersion Spanish Program opens at Elkhorn with a waiting list of interested families. Our Visual and Performing Arts programs include music, art, theatre and dance and have expanded across the District beginning with our Transitional Kindergarteners all the way up to River City High School. Our Career Technical Education programs continue to increase and progress through more rigorous pathways that lead to both college and career entry upon high school graduation. The District has invested resources and partners with community and service organizations to provide support services through social workers, youth outreach specialists, and home school liaisons. We have accomplished so much this past year and look forward to much more on behalf of our students.

Washington Unified stays committed to strong communication so that we strengthen our partnership as we work together on behalf of our students. That being said, please find attached to this message the latest update from the District on our current teacher negotiations ( CLICK HERE). We are confident that we will come to an amicable agreement very soon.

I want to thank you, in advance, for your continued support to our schools and staff in addition to all the time and efforts in completing all paperwork needed for the beginning of the school year. It is important that we have your most current information, address and phone numbers so that we can keep you updated on your student’s progress as well as what is happening in the District.

We greatly appreciate your positive encouragement to our students and support to our teachers for an exciting start of school on August 17th.

Truly yours,

Linda C. Luna
Superintendent
