Is your school or church group looking to get more involved in the community? Welcome House is a great organization to partner with in the upcoming year. Saint Henry District High School provides amazing services to Welcome House. Students with the National Honor Society threw a Valentine's Day and spring party for our shelter residents.
The Valentine's party included pizza for the shelter residents, and the women and children decorated cookies.Students provided pizza, cupcakes and games for the event in May. Saint Henry also provided several in-kind donations, which included hygiene items, school supplies and new blankets. We are grateful for all of their support. Thank you Crusaders! |

Volunteers Spotlight: Meralyn Taylor
 |
Meralyn Taylor has been with Welcome House almost from the beginning. She has volunteered in our Resource Pantry, sorted donations, and answered phones. Now she currently volunteers alongside our Employment Team. Her supervisor ,Tyana Owings, said "She has a wonderful way of putting people at ease. Including staff, clients and potential employers." It's no wonder Meralyn touches the hearts of so many people. She is a retired high school counselor and loves to work directly with people.
From her people skills to her sewing skills. Meralyn utilized all of her talents while volunteering at Welcome House. Meralyn has a passion for sewing. One year she found some used dolls that had been donated to Welcome House. She took the dolls home and cleaned them, fixed up their hair, and sewed new dresses for each doll. These dolls were used as Christmas presents and Meralyn recalls the dolls "turned out beautifully". However, her most rewarding experience came after tutoring one of our clients. The client went on to earn her GED and is now employed in the community. Meralyn often runs into her at her place of employment and seeing her and all of her success has been the highlight of her volunteering career at Welcome House.
So what are your talents? How are you wired? Contact Donna Hooper to learn about current volunteer opportunities. She will match your interest and talents with the agency's needs. |

A Little Help Goes A Long Way
A service project for Florence Elementary fourth graders touched close to home. Students toured Welcome House facilities and learned about the shelter, employment, housing, budget and life skills programs we offer. They also brought in sixty homemade blankets. They worked with their parents in the school cafeteria to put the blankets together for the women and children who live in our shelter. The service project helped the fourth graders learn about budgets, measurements, calculations and purchasing skills. The blankets were greatly appreciated. While at the Welcome House in late May, students were shocked to learn the national average age of a homeless person is nine-year-old. That's according to the Coalition for the Homeless. Nine is the average age of a fourth grader. |
