May was Older Americans Month

The Administration on Aging (AoA) and the Administration for Community Living (ACL) chose the theme, Blaze a Trail, for Older Americans Month. Today, more and more Americans are living long and healthy lives, well into their 60's, 70's and beyond. The concept of a traditional retirement rarely applies. So what are today's seniors doing? Many are reinventing themselves, often through the pursuit of a lifelong passion, volunteer opportunities, and even in the form of a new career. The AoA and ACL have created the Blaze a Trail to Reinvention tipsheet in an effort to encourage older Americans to pursue extracurricular activities into their retirement. Please share it with the seniors in your life!
Take the Guesswork Out of Gardening in the Lowcountry

flowerpot-woman.jpg
Whether you were born with a green thumb or are a gardening newbie, there are likely some tricks you could benefit from learning when it comes to gardening in the Lowcountry. Knowing which plants grow best during which time of the year is key to having a successful harvest. Luckily, the Post & Courier article, " Your Guide to what, and when to plant in the Lowcountry ," by Anthony Keinath, can answer many of your questions.  Clemson's Home and Garden Information Center is another incredible resource for gardening enthusiasts. One of my favorite picks for planting right now--sweet potatoes, which contain high levels of antioxidants and vitamins A & C, and are just plain delicious! You'll have to be patient though, as they can't be harvested until early fall.
Recovering from Stroke: The Value of Rehabilitation

According to the American Stroke Association, stroke causes a death every 4 minutes, is more likely to happen to females than males, and is the leading cause of disability in adults. Recognizing the symptoms of a stroke is critical, as better outcomes can often be achieved if emergency treatment is received quickly. It is also important to understand your risk factors. Many people incorrectly believe that strokes aren't preventable, but according to the National Stroke Association, up to 80% of strokes are avoidable.  Just as timely treatment is important during a stroke, having a plan for recovery after a stroke is vital.
