Some years ago, when my son started his studies in a community college I asked him to comment on his new experience. He said that community college felt just like high school, with older students. His response didn’t make me very happy. Leaving course content aside, I believe colleges should provide an experiential environment in which a person can develop in ways other than just purely academic, while helping him/her grow as an individual towards adulthood.
As we start a new academic year at Cal Poly Pomona, it is appropriate to ask a similar question. How is your experience as a graduate student different from that of an undergraduate student? Although every one of you may have a different answer to this question, I can almost guarantee that graduate school doesn’t feel like working towards a bachelor’s degree with older students. While for most of us the “older” part is unquestionable, graduate school presents for many students new challenges and opportunities. On one hand graduate students are expected to be more independent, and most likely be required to do some sort of research and have the opportunity to contribute to your field of specialization. On the other, the quality of our students, faculty and programs create an excellent environment to pursue your professional development objectives.
As we start a new academic year I would like to take the opportunity to welcome everyone to school, and remind you that the Graduate Studies office is here to support you towards graduation. We have an open door policy, so if you think we can help you in any way drop by our office in Building 1, Room 113.
Sincerely,
Dr. Salomon Oldak
