Welcome to the Holistic Child Health Newsletter.

 

The goal of my holistic pediatric practice, and of this newsletter, is to inform and support parents to become more empowered as the primary health care providers for their children. Extending far beyond Western medicine's conventional treatments, holistic medicine and mindful parenting allow us to boost children's natural immunity, support their optimum health and wellness, safely heal any illnesses, and prevent disease-without dangerous side effects.  Holistic medicine provides us with the tools to nurture the physical, emotional, social and spiritual health of your children.  

 

Over the coming months and years, I intend to use this newsletter to address some of your concerns as parents, share information that you might want to add to your knowledge base, and inform you of important issues and current events that are happening in the news and in your area.

   Together we can heal the whole child. Naturally.

Dr. Palevsky's Comments: I've never understood the obsession with taking calcium supplements to help us build strong bones. Bones are made up of bone cells. And bone cells, as well as all cells in the body, are made up of very specific proportions of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water, which the body knows how to extract out of the bloodstream. Calcium is merely a mineral, albeit an important one, but only one mineral. Throwing extra calcium into the body and expecting to make stronger bones is like throwing bricks into an open lot and expecting an entire building to be constructed. It's fantasy. Bone cells are not made of calcium alone, and calcium needs to be in the right  proportion to all the other nutrients to allow the bones to lay down the proper matrix. In addition, who said that when we eat extra calcium, the mineral is going to be transported to the bones, or that it will be absorbed at all? Since every cell in the body needs calcium, especially muscles since calcium helps our muscles contract, the increased calcium in our diets may never even make it to the bones. It may, as pointed out in this article, increase the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system, and cause greater inflammation and chronic disease, instead. Same goes for drinking cow milk. Every time I recommend to parents that their children's health would be better off without drinking cow milk, or the milk of another animal, regardless of whether it's raw or pasteurized, I'm always asked, from where is my child going to get calcium? And, my response to them is.....the calcium in the milk does not have a predetermined destination. It is not tagged with a specific message to the body that says, "take me to the bones, go directly to the bones and nowhere else." The calcium can go anywhere. And, as evidenced from this article, that is not necessarily a benefit to the health of the body. Cow milk has a large amount of calcium because that's what baby cows need. But, it's not what human babies, children, or adults need. Moral of the story, eat whole foods, eat real foods, eat across the colors of the rainbow, enjoy your food, and eat a little bit of every food group. And, if you're going to eat dairy, at least eat raw dairy (better from goats or sheep, or from European cows to avoid the A1 casein in American cows). Eat the raw dairy as a condiment, in small amounts, and make sure some of it is fermented, but please don't eat it as a meal.

Dr. Palevsky's Comments: The following comments come from a scientific member of the Collaborative on Health and the Environment (CHE) EMF listserv (www.healthandenvironment.org): "This study concludes that when a laptop is used by a pregnant woman, the electric current densities produced by the power supply of the laptop can produce excessively high exposures to both the fetus and the mother's tissues, greatly exceeding allowable safety standards. Electric current densities in the fetus are 182% to 263% higher than the safety limit; and 71% to 483% higher for the mother." The authors are well-known in the EMF research community in Italy.

The Good and the Bad of Going Gluten Free

 
Dr Palevsky's Comments:   One in 100 people in this country have celiac disease and must avoid all gluten grains in their diet (wheat, rye, barley, spelt, kamut). But, there are many more people who are gluten sensitive even if they test negative for celiac disease. The number of people who are coming up gluten sensitive, and the number of disease states where symptoms worsen in reaction to gluten in the diet, are rising exponentially. Therefore, many people are benefiting from a gluten-free diet. Non-gluten grains consist of gluten-free oats, rice, corn, millet, buckwheat, sorghum and amaranth. Quinoa is mentioned as a gluten-free grain, but it's really a fruit of a plant in the same family as the root vegetable, beets. One of the problems that many people run into when they eat gluten-free products (breads, pasta, crackers, cookies, cakes, donuts, muffins, waffles, pancakes, bagels, pretzels, cold cereal, croissants) is that these products are often lacking much in the way of any nutritional value because most of the important nutrients in the grains are removed when the grains are processed into a flour. A little bit of enrichment of these flour products does not make them rich with nutritional value, not when the major nutritional value of the grains has been stripped to make the flour product. When consumed, these flour products are seen by the body as simple sugars, and inflammatory symptoms easily emerge as a result of eating these gluten-free flour products. Just because baked flour products are gluten-free doesn't mean they are healthy, or that they aren't going to contribute to negative health issues related to their consumption. For many who are gluten sensitive, the removal of gluten from the diet can contribute to amazing improvements in their health. Eating all of these processed gluten-free products, however, may then contribute to the development of many other inflammatory symptoms that might not have been there before, or people will find that their symptoms are no better on a gluten-free diet. It's a trade-off, and may not be a healthy one. If you're going to eat gluten-free, it's healthier to eat the whole grains themselves, although for a growing number of people even the mere consumption of grains has begun to create health problems as well. Many people have taken to the Paleolithic diet, following the work of Loren Cordain, PhD. Others have been following the GAPS diet (www.gapdiet.com). Whatever diet works best for each individual, it's best to eat whole foods, drink plenty of water, get outside, rest, engage in meaningful relationships and activities, and enjoy your food.

Dr. Palevsky's Comments: Juice is not a serving of fruit. It is a 

concentrate of the sugar from the fruit, without the important fiber that makes the fruit more valuable as a source of good nutrition and intestinal health. This concentrate of sugar can be mucus producing, stimulating to a child's behavior, contribute to constipation or diarrhea, and increase inflammation in the body. Best to give children water as their main beverage, and offer organic fruits, in season, as a snack, in between meals, preferably earlier in the day. MMR: A Mother's Victory

 

The vast majority of doctors say there is no link between the triple jab and autism, but could an Italian court case reignite this controversial debate? Landmark ruling in an Italian court has said Valentino Bocca's autism was provoked by the MMR jab he had at age nine months.  His parents have already been awarded �140,000 and could be paid an additional �800,000 in their case against the Italian government. The case could set a precedent for many similar civil proceedings.

ensed for use in the US in 1963, the CDC reports that 400,000 cases of measles infections occurred each year in the US. Yet, the incidence rate of measles encephalitis (SSPE) was only .00

61%. Encephalitis is another term for brain inflammation, and it occurs rarely after a measles infection due to a slow viral infection of the brain weeks, months or even years after the resolution of a measles infection. According to the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00001185.htm), there were 368 cases of SSPE in US citizens between 1969 and 1981. 55% (202) of the cases had only a history of having had a measles infection. 14% (51) had a history of only having received the measles vaccine, and 17% had a history of having had both the natural measles infection and the measles vaccine. 14% (52) gave no history of either having had the measles infection or the vaccine. These data clearly show that SSPE can occur after a subset of people have received the measles vaccine. The development of encephalitis is not just limited to people who experience a natural measles infection. According to the CDC, 1 in 88 US children have received the diagnosis of autism (http://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2012/p0329_autism_disorder.html). In children with autism, we are finding that they too have a considerable amount of brain inflammation. In other words, children with autism also suffer fro

m encephalitis. Since the CDC points out that encephalitis can occur in people who receive the measles vaccine, it is scientifically valid to say that in a subset of the 1 in 88 children who suffer from autism, i.e., brain inflammation, the measles vaccine they received may have contributed to the onset of their brain inflammation. So, here's the tradeoff. We've gone from an encephalitis incidence rate post measles infection of .0061% to an encephalitis incidence rate post measles vaccination of 1.14% (1 in 88 children). As a result of the use of the measles vaccine, we see fewer obvious cases of acute measles infections. Instead, however, we now have many more clinical cases of chronic brain inflammation, the very complication of a natural measles infection that the vaccine was supposed to protect against. I'd say the measles vaccine program has failed to accomplish what it was meant to do, and now, as a result of our attempts to minimize the rare complication of a measles infection by stopping children from experiencing a measles infection, we have created the very problem of an inordinate amount of children with chronic brain inflammation.

Low Birth Weight Linked To Autism

Dr. Palevsky's Comments: I think we can say with pretty good certainty that there is evidence in the literature to support the notion that children along the spectrum of autism disorders demonstrate a fair amount of immune and nervous system inflammation in their bodies, as shown by their biochemical profiles. I think there is also sufficient evidence in the literature to support an association between environmental stressors in the mom and low birth weight babies (hypoxia, diabetes, obesity, cigarette smoking, drug use, etc). These children with low birth weight are at an increased risk of having a higher baseline of inflammation in their biochemistry merely as a result of how normal systems would respond to any stressor(s) to which they are exposed. One twin can be unfavorably affected to one or more of the stressors than the other twin. Just because the twins are in the same womb doesn't necessarily guarantee they will be exposed to the same stressors equally, or even respond to the same stressors in the same way. It would stand to reason, therefore, that if one or both twins is/are stressed by environmental factors in utero, and stress automatically turns on the inflammatory arm of the immune system, then these low birth weight children will already be coming into the world with an increased baseline level of inflammation in their bodies. As a result, they will exhibit a decreased resilience in their response to exposures to other stressors in their lives once they are born, and have an increased susceptibility to expressing clinical scenarios of varying degrees of inflammation during the course of their early childhood, autism spectrum disorder being one of these chronic inflammatory conditions.

 


DR LARRY'S SICK CHILD TOOLBOX

 

General Guidance if Your Child is Sick:

 

"Do less, Stimulate less, Speak less, Eat less."

"Drink more, Sleep more, Rest more, and Breathe more."

 

 

  

1) Stop your daily routine and encourage your child, and your family members, to rest.

2) Provide a safe and comfortable environment for your child to process the illness.

3) Encourage plenty of fluids (water, tea, broth, soup, breast milk). If your child is on formula, you may need to either stop the formula completely, or feed fewer ounces through the illness.

4) Turn the volume down.... Reduce activity levels, noise, excitement, schedules, chores, and tasks to a minimum. 

5) Turn the lights down. Maintain a calm, quiet, peaceful environment for your child's nervous system to heal. 

6) Stay indoors; play quiet games. Going outside can be too much of an energetic overload for your child's body when sick, and may prolong and intensify the stress on his body.

7) Give your child a warm bath, several times per day if necessary, and stay with your child as much as possible. Lay low, and watch your child closely. Be mindful of cool or cold drafts when getting out of the bath.

8) Regarding supplements, it is best to stop most, if not all of the supplements that your child is taking. You will need to use your judgment in making this decision.

9) Do not force your child to eat. When children are sick, or not feeling well, their digestive systems slow down. Food is one of the last things children are interested in when they have a fever or don't feel well. Just ensure fluid intake, and don't push foods. Their bodies will tell you when they are ready to start eating again. And, most importantly, avoid sugar, including juices, flour and dairy products, and fried foods, when your child is sick, as these foods tend to increase stress, dehydration, and mucus production in the body, which will prolong, or worsen, the course of illness. 

10) Observe your child for mental status changes. Use the Pediatric Checklist on my website as a guide.

11) Please remember that the resolution of illness can take some time. The more patience you have, the more closely you observe your child, and the more you efficiently remove the stressors in your child's environments, the greater you will impact the length of recovery for your child's illness. Use the Pediatric Checklist on my website and your intuition, to help you decide when more medical attention is needed.

12) You may need to cancel plans, stay home, and not participate in previously planned activities so your child can rest and heal at home in her own comfortable, safe environment. The most important thing you can do as a parent is to provide your child with a safe environment in which healing can occur.

13) Make the first day your child feels better a slow day. Stay home and rest for the first 24 hours that the symptoms of illness have finally abated. Try not to rush back into the daily routine of life.
