Flu by Numbers

Flu Clinic

According to a report by CBC News during the most recent flu season in January 2011, the following Canadian flu statistics should be regarded with significant concern...

  • 3 million to 7.5 million: Estimated number of Canadians who become infected with the influenza virus each year.
  • 4,000 to 8,000: The approximate number of Canadians who die of influenza or its complications each year in Canada.
  • 70 to 90 per cent: Percentage of influenza vaccinations that successfully produce the antibodies to fight off the flu in healthy adults.
  • 6-10: Typical number of days it takes people to get over the flu. Symptoms include fever, headache, coughing, loss of appetite, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes stomach ache and diarrhea.
  • 3: The number of pandemics (worldwide epidemics) of influenza in the 1900s. These occurred during the influenza seasons of 1918-1919, 1957-1958 and 1968-1969.

The best way to protect yourself, your family and your colleagues is to get the flu shot every year.

Flu Prevention Checklist

The Public Health Agency of Canada offers these simple steps to staying healthy and preventing the spread of the flu virus during the upcoming flu season.

  • Get your flu shot: Getting the flu shot every year is one of the most effective ways to prevent catching and spreading the flu virus.
  • Wash your hands frequently: Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds to help remove bacteria and viruses. Wash before and after eating, after you have been in a public place, after using the washroom, after coughing and sneezing and after touching surfaces that may have been contaminated. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer is also effective in killing viruses.
  • Keep your hands away from your face: In most cases, the flu virus enters the body through the eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Cough and sneeze into your arm, not your hand: If you use a tissue, dispose of it as soon as possible and wash your hands.
  • Keep common surface areas clean and disinfected: Doorknobs, light switches, telephones, keyboards and other surfaces can become contaminated with all kinds of bacteria and viruses. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of these surfaces with normal household disinfectants can help. Viruses can live on hard surfaces for up to 48 hours.
  • If you get sick, stay home: If you think you have the flu, you should stay home from work until your symptoms are gone. If your symptoms get worse, call your health care provider.

By following these manageable suggestions, you can help keep yourself, your family and your colleagues flu-free this year.

Keeping Your Workplace Healthy

In Canada, the flu season typically occurs between November and April. Full protection against the flu takes about two weeks from the time you get your flu shot and lasts about six months. Because it takes a couple of weeks for your immunity to develop, it is important to get your flu shot early so you're covered when the virus strikes.

On-site Corporate Flu Clinics provide an easy, convenient way for employees to receive their flu shots without having to take time off work to see their doctor or attend a public clinic.

These clinics are an efficient and responsible way for corporations to minimize the costs associated with illness-related absences, while providing their employees with a valuable health benefit.

Brady and Associates Inc. has been conducting Corporate Flu Clinics for over a decade across Canada. We offer the highest quality professional service at an affordable price and provide everything you need to run a successful clinic with minimal interuption to your workplace.

Following are some compelling findings from last year's Corporate Flu Clinics:

  • 73% of people who received the flu shot in the workplace remained healthy during the flu season
  • 88% of those families who all received the flu shot were healthy during the flu season
  • Many participants expressed interest in having their families attend the Flu Clinic with them to increase their prospects of staying healthy at home as well as at work
  • 85% of participants said they felt more security knowing their workplace was vaccinated
  • 20% more people got the flu shot purely because it was offered at work and therefore more convenient

The top three reasons people get the flu shot at work:

1.       Health security

2.       Lost time

3.       Convenience
