Leonard Velez |
Leonard Velez, 42, is a father of four young daughters. He was suddenly laid off from his job at Social Annex, a local software company, where he worked as a Service Director. Mr. Velez visited the Inglewood One-Stop Business & Career Center, seeking additional training in hopes of reentering the workforce. Mr. Velez attended a Workforce Innovation Opportunities Act (WIOA) information session, was deemed eligible and enrolled as a Dislocated Worker shortly thereafter.

Sogigie Sherfa, 18, of Lomita, a recent graduate of Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, was seeking a part time employment opportunity. She came to Torrance One-Stop to inquire about the summer program, which provides first time work experience (clerical/recreational/maintenance/ child care) assignments to youth ages 14-24 in various city government or community based organization settings. Youth will go through 20 hours of personal enrichment training and later are placed at work sites to work an average of 100 hours.

More than 100 youth, parents, community partners and civic leaders joined with the SBWIB to celebrate the eighth anniversary of the Hawthorne Teen Center, December 1st, at the center which is located at the Hawthorne Memorial Center.

The SBWIB introduces new resources available to the homeless serving the (11) cities located in southwest Los Angeles County: Hawthorne, Inglewood, Gardena, Carson, Lawndale, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance and Lomita. Assistance is available for families, adults, veterans and individuals providing them with basic needs, job search, hands-on experience, resume preparation, housing, food pantries and more. A flyer may be downloaded pertaining to individual communities at the link below. Additional services for people enrolled in GAIN are available throughout Los Angeles County. The Transitional Subsidized Employment Program has been extended to
10 m
onths in length. Employers can receive a minimum wage employee, who is available to work up to 40 hours per week, f
or 10
months at no cost. The SBWIB will cover all wages, taxes and workers' compensation. This program is available to any non-profit or government entity
in Los Angeles County and provides on-the-job training to individuals who need experience in the workplace.

The SBWIB is developing an engineering pre-apprenticeship program to develop a workforce pipeline of engineers in the South Bay so companies can find the talent they need locally. The program is in development and the SBWIB is seeking input from stakeholders. Below are two surveys, one is a general needs survey and the other is a skills survey to help us develop the curriculum. Thank you in advance for your participation.

, are in the process of developing a Broadband Fiber-Optic Master Plan for the South Bay region. Broadband speed and capacity is a crucial driver for job creation and economic growth. Fast Broadband provides improved download and upload speeds, as well as providing a more reliable service.
