SOUTH BAY AREA SUCCESS STORIES


Deidre Gustavson, a 52-year-old resident from Redondo Beach, was laid off from Mattel in El Segundo. Having worked as a Project Engineer for 10 years, she was let go when the company found themselves facing financial hardship. Ms. Gustavson went to the Inglewood One-Stop to see what opportunities were available to her. It was determined that she needed to gain new skills from training in order to reenter the workforce. Ms. Gustavson attended a Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) information session, where she was deemed eligible and enrolled in the program as a Dislocated Worker.

Javari Reagan graduated from Inglewood High School in June 2016. The foster youth was living with his sister, as his father is deceased and he has little contact with his mother. Hoping to contribute to the household and help his sister with living expenses, Mr. Reagan went to the Inglewood One-Stop, in search of a job. 

Mr. Reagan entered the Bridge-to-Work Foster Youth program at the Inglewood One-Stop in March 2016 and registered for the Blueprint for Workplace Success class. Mr. Reagan indicated that the class was the best he had ever taken and that it helped build his confidence in ... 
 
WHAT'S NEW
2016 Day in the Life tour
Fifteen 8th grade youth from the South Bay Area participated in the 3rd Annual "A Day in the life of a College Student," event, which took place July 13 & 14, 2016. The event included a guided tour, informational workshops, as well as an overnight stay on campus at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). The tour was organized by the Hawthorne and Inglewood Teen Centers, which are administered by the South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB) through its One-Stop Centers, which partners with CSUDH.


The U.S. Department of Labor recently announced the award of $500,000 in grant funds to the South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB). The funds will provide support services to currently incarcerated individuals at Men's Central Jail (MCJ) to prepare for employment and assist these soon-to-be-released individuals (inmates) as they transition into working life.

SBWIB was one of 11 organizations awarded approximately $5.5 million in grants and will utilize the funds to support the "Reentry Works" Linking to Employment Activities Pre-release program through a specialized jail-based American Job Centers (AJC) in partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LACSD) at Men's Central Jail (MCJ), ...

Headed by the South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB), a consortium of manufacturing and education partners were recently awarded more than $200,000 for apprenticeship training in the South Bay Area. The SBWIB received a $150,000 grant from the California Workforce Accelerator Fund, which will be aligned with a $60,000 grant awarded to West Los Angeles College (WLAC) by the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership of Southern California (AMP SoCal). Funding from both grants will be used to design a pre-apprenticeship program linked to registered apprenticeship training with a unique focus on engineering occupations in aerospace and other manufacturing sectors.

Three-day Teacher Externship

The South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB), in partnership with Centinela Valley Union High School District (CVUHSD) and Career Ladders Project, hosted a three-day South Bay Digital Media Arts Consortium (SBDMAC) Work-Based Learning Summer Externship for teachers, former students, and private industry partners, August 8-10, 2016.
