Welcome to the September Effect

President's Message

To All,
I want to extend a special thank-you to Father Jerel Scholl and everyone, from St. Paulinus, involved in hosting the LDCCW Fall meeting in Syracuse on Saturday, August 18, 2018. Thanks also to everyone that attended the meeting. The Marian Sisters at
St. Gianna Women’s Homes want you to know you are in their prayers, thanking you for your generosity in donating requested items.
On Sept. 5 th , we will celebrate the feast of St. Teresa of Calcutta, the Patron Saint for my LDCCW term, 2018-2020.  Let us pray we can become more like St. Teresa of Calcutta in providing assistance to all we meet and seeing the face of Jesus in everyone.
God Bless
Kay Wessel, LDCCW President

Last month’s Effect had listed the Girl’s Religious Awards in our Diocese. This originated as an alternative to the Boy Scout Awards given out as meritorious badges.
“Each spring, since 1989, girls from across the Diocese of Lincoln have been recognized for their achievement in earning a Girls’ Religious Award. Members of Girl Scouts, American Heritage Girls, Little Flowers, 4-H, Junior Catholic Daughters, or Schoenstatt Girls, may earn any of the five medals:  Family of God, I Live My Faith, Marian, Spirit Alive, or Divine Mercy.
Order the Book for the age level you need from the Diocese of Lincoln website, or call the Youth Ministry Office at 402-473-0625, or email the
office at [email protected].

You can go online to the Lincoln Diocese and read about the awards available.

Children are back in school and you may be looking for a new project or at least one new to you. Are there volunteer opportunities at the schools near you? Does the pre-school need help? Could you help a student with reading? Could you assist with laundering altar linens? Perhaps you can organize meals for a family in your parish that could use some short term assistance. Is the bloodmobile coming to your area? Could you assist with donor registration or bake some cookies for the bloodmobile? Could you offer to deliver Meals on Wheels? If you could not be a regular deliverer perhaps as a substitute deliverer? Could you assist with a Food Net in your area? Could you offer to assist an elderly parishioner get to Mass, appointments or shopping?
Your community has many opportunities for you. The blessings you receive will be greater than your time commitment. God Bless You!
“Lord, be merciful to your people. Fill us with your gifts and make us always eager to serve you in faith, hope and love. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen”

How well do you know your CCW sister? This question was posed in the August Connect. Do you know what is going on in their life today? I am going to say we really don’t know our fellow sisters on our council. The Connect suggests: “Have everyone write down 3 things about themselves, one thing being something that few people would know. Then at each meeting, read 3 or 4 of the cards and try to guess who that person is.” It is a great ice breaker. Maybe at your council meetings provide cards and stamps and write done “I gotcha” moments and send them from the meeting those moments of focusing on another person and uplifting them can make a difference in what may be a tough day. As we encourage women to attend our meetings we need to reach out with kindness and friendship to our sisters. Your kinds words or compassion may lead them to the council to be a great leader! One missed contact may take more attempts to bring them back to council.

Leadership Training Report – Terri Sullivan

Last term the leadership training team presented workshops on the role of Councils of Catholic Women and how to work together to be effective and successful as Catholic Women. They looked at how the chain began with the National Council of Catholic Women and ended up on the Parish level.

This term with Kay Wessel as LDCCW President, I would like to work on the job descriptions on all levels of Councils of Catholic Women. Our first step is to look into each Deanery and see if job descriptions are in place, and if so, what they entail and how/if they might be improved. Once the Deanery job descriptions are completed, we will look at the Parish CCW job descriptions. It is important that all the levels work together to be sure things get done effectively and make it easier for new officers to do their duties.

What I would like each Deanery to do is go back and look and see if job descriptions are available for each office. Let me know what you find, and we will work together to make them successful for a smooth transition for new officers.
