Welcome,

Well, we made it through winter and we are headed into spring.  Along with the change in season comes the change in our activity level. Outdoor activities are increasing and our more sedentary winter bodies must adapt to this increased activity.

Often our dietary intake get more restricted in the winter months, and coupled with decreased sunlight and activity, toxins tend to build up in our system.  As spring approaches our systems crave the opportunity to clean themselves out and restore their vitality.

Many of us were not able to travel or get out as much this winter and have neglected some of our usual healthy habits: chiropractic adjustments, regular exercise, healthy eating, getting outside for fresh air during the work day, and even our sleep patterns may have been disrupted.  Also the physical and emotional stresses created during this "record setting" winter have built up over time.

As the spring awakens it is a good time for all of us to reestablish our healthy lifestyles and move forward in a positive manner.  If you are looking for a natural, non-invasive, safe and powerful way to improve your health starting with a healthy, highly functional nervous system, Chiropractic is your best bet.

We at Wellesley Chiropractic Office offer specialized chiropractic care for all ages.  Our techniques have been proven safe and effective for over 32 years.  If you have a healthcare issue, or you just want to perform and function at your best, we are here to help you reach your goals.  If you would like more information or to schedule and appointment please contact our office.

Sincerely,

Growing Pains and Chiropractic Care
ICPA April 2015 Family Wellness First

The term "growing pains" was first seen in medical literature
in 1823. There were many different explanations for these pains. Some, such as the assertion that pains are a symptom of rheumatic fever, have been discredited.

What are Growing Pains?
Although there are no known medical causes, theories of cause range from muscle fatigue to juvenile arthritis. According to a 1984 study, limb pain was a presenting complaint in 7% of
pediatrician visits. A South Australian study published in the August 2004 issue of the Journal of Pediatrics found that approximately 36.9% of children 4 to 6 years of age experienced growing pains. This was nearly one third of the children in the population.

These leg pains are usually brushed off as normal occurrences by medical doctors who contribute them to daily physical activity. Parents are given few to no options for treatment. Typically, massaging the legs and the use of analgesics are the only suggestions. Parents are told this is normal during the growth process and it will pass. This offers no comfort to parents who awaken to their child's cries night after night.  "Growing pains" affect 25% - 40% of children.  Are there other options available to alleviate these leg pains?  YES! Try Chiropractic!

Getting to the Cause
So, what causes these "growing pains"? From a chiropractic standpoint, we must look at the biomechanical issues. We must first understand the growth process time line.

The first five years of a child's life is the time of greatest spinal growth. During the first year of life, the spine increases 12 cm in length and another 15 cm between 1 and 5 years of age. Between 5 and 10 years of age, the growth rate decreases to 10 cm. There is another increase at puberty between approximately 10 and 18 years of age with 20 cm of spinal grown in males and 15 cm in females. Logically, if something interferes with this growth process, there may be problems.

What if a child was put into a baby walker before his/ her body was ready to walk? This premature walking assistance can alter
biomechanics, leading to postural abnormalities, disruption of proper locomotion skills, and also injury to the child. Other interferences of the growth process may include birth trauma, a fall, sports injuries, and overly sedentary lifestyles.  Another important point is that many of these children also have complaints of spinal pain in addition to the leg pain. There is little medical research, but, much of what there is focuses only on growing in the legs.

Chiropractors look at the body as a whole and not as separate parts.  Chiropractors recognize that, if there is stress in
one area of the body, the rest of the body will somehow compensate for this stress.

The Chiropractic Approach
As in all situations chiropractors are trained to look for the cause of the problem and not just focus on the presenting symptom.  Especially in the pediatric population, it is important to find the cause of the problem before the child creates compensatory patterns that follow them throughout their lives.  If your child is experiencing "growing pains" or any other "normal" symptoms they should have there spine and nervous system checked to make sure there are no underlying problems creating these conditions.
Nutrition Corner - 21 Day Spring Cleanse

We are constantly exposed to numerous chemical and environmental toxins.   The toxins build up in the body and can cause a variety of symptoms and dysfunctions including:
  • Fatigue and difficulty sleeping
  • Indigestion and other gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Congestion
  • Inflammation
  • Weight gain
  • Decreased mental clarity
  • Decreased libido
  • Loss of or drier hair
  • Acne
  • Allergies
  • Etc.

Treating these symptoms individually instead of a part of the whole limits the response.  If several of the above issues ring true for you, using the seasonal transition from cold to the warmer weather of Spring to begin cleansing your body can promote the release of toxins and promote healing.

The 21 Day Purification Program is not just another diet or quick detox.  By following this program you can create a transition to a new way of eating resulting in a variety of lifestyle changes and healing capabilities.  Eating an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits on a regular basis along with exercise support your bodies' ability to fight disease and maintain health.

If you are interested in more information or would like to begin the purification program please ask one of our doctors or staff.

*We also have available a 10-day cleanse for those who want a less intense program.

Resolution of Breastfeeding and Gastrointestinal Complaints in Infant Twins with Plagiocephaly &  Scaphocephaly Following Birth Trauma

Kimberly Collins B Chiro, Joel Alcantara BSc, DC, Kelly Holt BSc (Chiro) PhD
Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health - Chiropractic ~ Volume 2015 ~ Issue 1 ~ Pages 34-41

Abstract

Objective: This article describes and discusses the chiropractic care of seven month old prematurely delivered fraternal twin boys with plagiocephaly and scaphocephaly.

Clinical Features: Seven month old fraternal twin boys with chronic reflux, breastfeeding difficulties, irritability, excessive crying, plagiocephaly, and scaphocephaly were presented by their mother for chiropractic care.

Intervention and Outcome: The children received spinal and cranial adjustments based on Sacro Occipital and Neuro Emotional Technique protocols.  After 8 weeks of chiropractic care the mother reported a decrease in severity of the twins reflux, breastfeeding difficulties and irritability.  At 16 weeks of chiropractic care the twins reflux had ceased and their cranial symmetry had markedly improved.

Conclusion:  Complaints associated with birth trauma including deformational plagiocephaly, breastfeeding difficulties and general irritability improved in seven month old twin boys while they were receiving chiropractic care. We support further research to examine the role chiropractors may play in caring for infants with plagiocephaly and other complaints associated with birth trauma.
