Wellesley Books Newsletter
June 20th, 2018

Do you hear that sound -- that collective exhalation of relief?  The kids are out of school and summer vacations will commence any day now.  It's time for beaches, summer camp, and trips to faraway places, and nothing makes a better companion for these travels than a book.  We have terrific beach reads for every member of the family as well as great gifts and stationery for those glorious days at summer camp.  Don't forget your child's required summer reading!  Whether you are heading to the Cape or Disneyland or even delighting in a staycation (hopefully involving a hammock and a cool beverage), don't forget that wonderful companion -- your summer read.

As a reminder . . . we will be open from 9:00 AM till 6:00 PM on July 3rd
and CLOSED on July 4th.
Happy Summer!

Bill's Book Group For Guys

by Charles Portis

Charles Portis, author of the masterpiece True Grit, is an American treasure.  Gringos is one of my favorite recommendations -- a perfect beach read, whether you are heading
 to the beach or not.

Join Bill's Book Group for Guys for a relaxed evening in the store discussing a specially-chosen book while enjoying a beer, glass of wine, or select single-malt whiskey.  $25 buys the book and a ticket to the event.
Betty's Lunchtime Book Group

by Jesmyn Ward

Betty Sudarsky, unparalleled bookseller and experienced book club leader, chooses each book carefully and leads the discussion.  Bring your own lunch if you like; Betty supplies snacks, drinks, and insight.  No need to sign up; drop-ins are welcome.
Bookseller Recommendations

William Recommends:
Who Is Vera Kelly? by Rosalie Knecht
Who is Vera Kelly? Find out in this twisty, turny spy thriller set in 1960s Argentina as Vera, working for the CIA, becomes stuck in the country during a hostile takeover. Through flashbacks, we learn about Vera's past and the forces that worked together to create this devilishly smart, very sexy woman. The book reads like the love child of John le Carré and Rita Mae Brown. I loved Vera immensely, even more so as the plot progressed and the threats became deadlier. What a fun read and what a terrific character!

Sally Recommends:
Florida by Lauren Groff
No one does a short story better than Lauren Groff. These tales are set in hot, humid, dank, swampy towns, and they are full of fairytale dangers.  Viewed through the eyes of the women and children that occupy them, they are also full of compassion and beauty.

Pete Recommends:
The Outer Beach by Robert Finch
Now in paperback and ready to accompany you to the beach, Finch's examination of Cape Cod over many years is essential summer reading.  It is jam-packed with fascinating people with all of their quirks.  It's wonderful to read about the wild and raw side of the Cape shore.

Bookseller Recommendations For Young Adults

William Recommends:
Neverworld Wake
by Marisha Pessl
This novel begins like a young adult version of Groundhog Day, with a group of young people experiencing the same 11 hours over and over. One will be allowed to live while the others will die -- and they must unanimously vote on it! Mysteries and secrets from the past intertwine with the dangers of the present in this wonderfully dark fantasy novel. Pessl really delves into the psyche of young people, exposing traumas and fears that are usually well-hidden. The finale is stunning -- a brilliant piece of psychological drama that is both suspenseful and, ultimately, incredibly moving.

Gifts For Beach Houses

Are you heading to the Cape this summer?  We have excellent gifts for beach houses and for hostess gifts.  Try lovely anchor or mermaid stationery or subtle scented candles.  If you want to record your thoughts while on vacation, try a beach journal, decorated with nautical regalia.  Wine bags are a special gift, and you know you can use one for yourself!

Dog of the Week
Ariel and Ivy

One of our favorite canine visitors, Zoe (left) brought along her two Boston Terrier 'cousins' to see us, and she taught them all about how to get treats at the counter.  Ariel (in the middle) and Ivy (on the right) are sisters from Pepperell whose owners are on vacation in England.  Welcome to Wellesley Books, Ariel, Ivy, and Zoe, too!
