Our events season is getting ready to start soon, beginning with the popular Young Adult author Marie Lu on September 14th.  Jane, our events manager extraordinaire, has been busy arranging for a terrific autumn list of author appearances and signings, featuring best-selling writers such as Celeste Ng, Joyce Maynard, and Claire Messud along with an astounding list of great writers of children's and young adult literature, including Avi, Ridley Pearson, E. Lockhart, Maggie Stiefvater, and Alexandra Bracken.  It's a great opportunity to learn about a new author or visit with a favorite and get a signed book.  You can see the forthcoming events just below this box, or you can click here to see a posting of the full season.  Check back every so often, as events may be added after the season begins!

Bill's Book Group For Guys
by Denis Johnson

This National Book Award-winner scathingly riffs on the Vietnam War, disinformation programs, disillusion and atonement, and the many personalities of Americans as seen through the eyes of one CIA operative.  It is brilliant and epic in scope.

Join Bill's Book Group for Guys for a relaxed evening in the store discussing a specially-chosen book while enjoying a beer, glass of wine, or select single-malt whiskey.  $25 buys the book and a ticket to the event.

Bookseller Recommendations

Sally Recommends:

Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo
Yejide and Akin are a modern Nigerian couple who are desperate to have a child, and they resort to desperate means to make that happen. The story of their lives together against the backdrop of their beloved Nigeria's political upheavals make this a fascinating, heartbreaking, and beautiful book.

Betty Recommends:

Glass Houses by Louise Penny
Ah, a new Louise Penny! This one is a real maze of intrigue, and I thought one of her better mysteries.  Gamache puts his reputation on the line when he hatches a plan to thwart and capture a drug cartel or two and stem the tide of opiates that are ruthlessly killing people in Canada and the US.  The usual cast mix with a group of millennials to confuse the reader in a most satisfying way.  A little darker and more psychological, this is one of my favorites in a very good series.

Gillian Recommends:

Hamlet Globe To Globe by Dominic Dromgoole
In honor of the 450th Anniversary of Shakespeare's birth , the Globe Theatre in London mounted a production of Hamlet and sent it to every country in the world. Some audiences rolled out the red carpet and others understood no English and had never heard of the Danish prince. This beautifully-written and irreverent account of an extraordinary two-year journey across this crazy globe of ours celebrates the universality of a timeless story that resonates from refugee camps to opera houses.

William Recommends :
My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent
If you loved the powerhouse novel A Little Life, you will probably love this new novel, the story of a young girl who has been raised off the map, cleaning guns and being horribly abused by her father.  When he shows up with a nine-year old girl one day, she must attempt to escape this possessive psychotic monster and save this other child from a life of fear and self-doubt.  This isn't a book for the faint of heart -- it is raw and visceral -- but it is beautifully written, featuring gorgeous descriptions of California seascapes and imbued with the resilience of humanity.
