Wellesley Books Newsletter
  January 31st, 2018

Valentine's Day is in just two weeks, so this is your official heads-up to find the perfect present for your sweetheart.  What could show your love more than a beautiful card and a book that you have personally chosen for your better half?  They don't have to know you had assistance from our staff in choosing that perfect book.  We are ready to help you discover something that will make your Valentine smile, something that will show how much you care about them.  Why not add a thoughtful gift to go along with the book -- some candy or a stuffed animal?  This is the one day out of the year clearly designated to show people that you love them and appreciate them.  Whatever you do -- don't forget the date!
Employment Opportunities
Do you love shopping at our store?  Do you enjoy staying current with the worlds of books and gifts and sharing your favorites?  We are looking for a part-time bookseller for evenings and weekends, as well as a part-time giftseller for day shifts and occasional weekends. If you would like to learn more about either of these opportunities, please stop by the store for a job application, or send your resume to peter@wellesleybooks.com.

Bill's Book Group For Guys

by Cormac McCarthy

Cormac McCarthy's true epic is based on historical events from the 1850s on the Texas-Mexico border. It traces the fortunes of the Kid, a 14-year-old from Tennessee who stumbles into a nightmarish world where Indians are being murdered for their scalps.

Join Bill's Book Group for Guys for a relaxed evening in the store discussing a specially-chosen book while enjoying a beer, glass of wine, or select single-malt whiskey.  $25 buys the book and a ticket to the event.

Bookseller Recommendations

William Recommends:
King Zeno by Nathaniel Rich
It's 1918 in New Orleans, and the Big Easy is a pressure cooker about to explode.  A young musician decides to play his own kind of music, something new called jazz.  A police officer is haunted by a mistake made in his past.  A crime-family matriarch is preparing her trigger-happy son to take over the family business.  Then, the bodies begin turning up in the new canal being built in the Ninth Ward.  This is a brilliant historical novel, filled with colorful characters, that be-bops to a new, edgy rhythm.

Phyllis Recommends:
The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce
This is a wonderful story about two broken people who desperately need to find each other but don't quite know how.  Frank, a quirky music lover, is committed to vinyl and being alone.  Elsa, whose real secrets we don't learn until quite late, has moved to London to start a new life.  As Frank and Elsa's worlds collide in unexpected ways, we are treated to a unique love story full of the fabulous characters who populate the shops and flats in a down-and-out council road designated for demolition.

Lorna Recommends:
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen
I'm always intrigued by co-written novels: how do they do it? These two have the background you want to see in an author (or two). Sarah Pekkanen is a novelist and former investigative journalist, and Greer Hendricks is an editor with a masters degree in journalism. They met when Greer became Sarah's editor, a friendship bloomed, and they are now co-authors. This perfect writing duo has created a fiendishly clever thriller, with a plot twist (or two), that has to be read to be believed.
