In the online publication Psychology Today the article Emotional Eating? 5 Reasons You Can't Stop Take control of your joy and pain to take away the power of food    by Jennifer Kromberg, PsyD says  Most people think emotional eating is due to lack of self-control.  However, in my extensive work with eating disorders and disordered eating, I would say that is rarely the case.

If emotional eating were a simple issue of discipline, we could easily find this discipline without torturing ourselves over meal plans, paying money for special diets, and constantly obsessing about who is eating what and when.

Dr. Kromberg says it all comes down to 5 things:

1. Unawareness
2. Food as your only pleasure
3. Inability to tolerate difficult feelings
4. Body Hate

Take a Self Test

Do you find yourself eating when you're not really hungry? Do you use food as a source of comfort when you're feeling sad, anxious, or bored?

Although emotional eating has become an all-too-common problem, many of us don't realize the extent to which our feelings can impact our eating habits. The occasional binge may seem harmless, but emotional eating can escalate into something more serious and difficult to control.

Find out whether your overeating is the result of a more deep-rooted issue with this emotional eating test.

A. Emotional eating is defined as an increase in food intake in response to negative emotions.
(Part 2 of a 3 part series)

Here is the blog posted by Hemi Weingarten on one of my favorite blogs Fooducate. It's so good I thought I would share it with you.  This is part 2 of a 3 part miniseries on a very touchy subject. In case you missed it here is Part 1: Emotional Eating: What Is It?

Today we explore

Part 2: Emotional Eating: Catching It Just In Time

We defined emotional eating and the difference between physical and emotional hunger. Today we'll help you identify when it happens to you.

Here are a few general questions to ask yourself:

1. Does stress lead me to eat more than I normally would?
2. Do I find myself eating when bored?
3. Does being around food cause me to feel like I am losing control?

If you answered yes to these questions, you may be prone to emotional eating. That doesn't mean you always eat this way, but even once or twice a week can be detrimental to a healthy diet.

Here is a video interview with Dr. Jenny Taitz, Author of "End Emotional Eating: Using Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills to Cope with Difficult Emotions and Develop a Healthy Relationship to Food".

If you eat to help manage your emotions, you may have discovered that it doesn't work. Eating can all too often become a strategy for coping with depression, anxiety, boredom, stress, and anger, and a reliable reward when it's time to celebrate.
