Q. Is soda pop really that bad for you?

Depending on what part of the country and what country you are from soda pop is known as soft drink, soda, pop, coke, fizzy drink, tonic, seltzer, mineral, sparkling water, lolly water or carbonated beverage.

As to the sweetness in soda pop, in 1970 high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) was introduced into the market place as a cheap sweetener. The problem is since 1970 the consumption of HFCS increased more than 1000% and by 2002, Americans doubled their consumption of sweetened beverages. Along with drinking more sweetened beverages comes obesity and diabetes epidemics along with heart disease which is effecting adults and children.

What you can do to avoid HFCS:

  1. Choose the whole fruit instead of juice.
    Choose fresh whole produce
  2. Limit processed foods and beverages, add more water & tea.
  3. Eat more meals prepared in your kitchen.
  4. Snack on whole foods, such as nuts, dried fruits and raw veggies.

Don't try to make a big change in your choice of drinks in one day. To make the switch, begin by adding in different healthier beverages while still drinking the unhealthy ones. Then slowly reduce unhealthy choices. Diet drinks with artificial sweeteners are on the unhealthy list!

  DO

Do read the ingredient labels (nutrition facts) for all food products including beverages to locate HFCS and artificial sweeteners. I have found HFCS in frozen chicken! To see how to find HFCS on the label click here
