Q. It's been months since I've been in the sun, what do I do about Vitamin D?
In the news there's been a lot of controversy lately about vitamin D and the recommendation to supplement. If you're confused about how much you should be taking, you're not alone. Have you heard the old joke put 10 doctors in a room and you'll get 10 different opinions? Sadly it's no joking matter. Why all the opinions?

Remember there is an art and a science to medical treatment and the science is constantly being updated. Sometimes it's just hard for your doctor to keep up with what's new. To answer the vitamin D question we can look to the recent science to help you make the decision that's best for you after talking with your doctor, of course.  I have to admit all the conflicting advice has left many of you unsure of what to do.

Why does Vitamin D matter?

WebMD has a great explanation for this question in the article Why Do I Need Vitamin D? I will repeat it here ...

Vitamin D deficiency has now been linked to breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, heart disease, depression, weight gain, and other maladies. These studies show that people with higher levels of vitamin D have a lower risk of disease, although they do not definitively prove that lack of vitamin D causes disease -- or that vitamin D supplements would lower risk.

The Vitamin D Council -- a scientist-led group promoting vitamin D deficiency awareness -- suggests vitamin D treatment might be found helpful in treating or preventing autism, autoimmune disease, cancer, chronic pain, depression, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, flu, neuromuscular diseases, and osteoporosis. Vitamin D and Sunshine

US News reported in the article Time in the Sun: How much do we need for Vitamin D?  -- in the winter, it's impossible to produce vitamin D3 from the sun if you live north of Atlanta because the sun never gets high enough in the sky for its ultraviolet B rays to penetrate the atmosphere.

In the summer when you are out in the sun the sun's UV-B rays hit the skin, which causes a a reaction to take place that enables skin cells to manufacture vitamin D3.

If you're fair skinned, experts say going outside for 10 minutes in the midday sun-in shorts and a tank top with no sunscreen-will give you enough radiation to produce about 10,000 international units of the vitamin. Dark-skinned individuals and the elderly also produce less vitamin D3.

So if you can not make all the vitamin D3 from the sun you have to get it from somewhere else.

Vitamin D3 and Supplementation

Do your research and supplement with an organic, non - toxic Vitamin D3. How much?  In general the amount is 1,000 - 4,000 iu. The Mayo Clinic helps us with a list of the the research made available related to Vitamin D3 supplementation. For the Mayo Clinic recommendations click here.  However, each person is different, it's always good to get your doctor's opinion before supplementation.

The Vitamin D Council recommends to help you decide on supplementation investigate the 25(OH)D blood test to measure how much vitamin D3 is in your system. Ask your doctor for the test. To learn more click here

Don't forget to wear sunscreen. Every day you are exposed to the sun you are at risk, not only in the summer. The Skin Cancer Foundation  recommends SPF 15 with every sun exposure.
