Gerhard Mengel O-30 Next in Line

Region1
(28 April) - We are down to our final four in the Werner Fricker USASA Open Cup. Our last set of quarterfinals to play is the Gerhard Mengel USASA Over-30 Cup with two matches set for this Sunday. We then take a brief break and return to the Open Cup on 17 May.

It all culminates to the Region I finals on 21 June at the Ukrainian American Sports Center in Horsham, Pennsylvania. More than 100 teams went through state qualifiers for a shot to reach the USASA National Cup Finals set at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach between 16 to 19 July. That week US Adult Soccer will celebrate its National Championship Series.

The two southern bracket quarterfinals were closely played, requiring extra time to determine the winners. West Chester Majors of Eastern Penn struck twice early in their 3:2 extra time victory over Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks of Maryland. The first goal came 3 minutes in when Pat Tobey put through a crossing ball from Chas Wilson. Wilson then doubled the lead in the 14th minute from a pass by Justin McCall. Scott Larrabee cut the deficit before the half on an assist from Michael Goldman. The Hawks then tied it 10 minutes into the second half on a goal from David Rosenbaum as he was fed from Gui Fonseca. McCall then put in the game winner in the 116th minute from a 20-yard free kick. The other half of the bracket saw FC Motown of New Jersey score two extra time goals to advance after a 2:2 draw in regulation against Hammers FC of Metro DC/Virginia.

Up north, Newtown Pride FC of Connecticut dominted host Rhode Island Oceaneers with a 5:1 victory. Mauro Dos Santos and Juan Galvis recorded braces with Mauricio Turizo scoring as well. Kendall Wanderers of Massachusetts made it a 2:0 shutout against the New York Pancyprian Freedoms by scoring a goal in each half. Robbie Sabadoz knocked in the game winner in the 25th minute and Mike Bridges' goal guaranteed a semifinal place in the 70th. The semifinals will take place on 17 May.

We had 9 state association enter champions into the Open Cup. In all, 43 teams went through state qualifiers with the goal to lift the cup.  We will find out who among the Final 4 will make the trip to  Virginia Beach to play in the  US Adult Soccer National Cup Finals.
