Mosquitoes in Keller test positive for West Nile Virus

August 25, 2014

The Tarrant County Public Health Department recently confirmed mosquito samples in Keller that tested positive for West Nile Virus. The samples were collected from traps in the 400 block of North Pearson Lane, 1400 block of Shady Grove Road and 150 block of West Bear Creek Parkway. Below is a map of the five test site locations in Keller that samples are taken from and then sent to the health department for testing.

The City of Keller is in the process of determining whether or not to proceed with ground spraying or targeted, backpack-based spraying. Westlake staff is communicating with the City of Keller in an effort to keep Westlake residents and businesses informed about Keller's West Nile mosquito abatement efforts.

August is typically the month West Nile Virus peaks, so let's remain proactive and continue efforts with mosquito abatement such as checking areas for stagnant water and practicing the four D's:

* Dusk and dawn are when mosquitoes are most active so stay indoors.

* Dress in long sleeves and pants when outside. For extra protection, spray thin clothing with repellent.

* DEET is an ingredient your insect repellent should contain. Always wear repellent when outdoors.

* Drain standing water! Remember, free briquettes are available at Westlake Town Hall if needed.
