Dear Pastor/Friends, daviddowns

I want to congratulate Pastor Steve Holmgren and his wife, Michelle, on Steve's outstanding two-year pastoral review, which I conducted in Bowie this past Wednesday evening.
As you know, we frequently use a 30-question question naire with the board to help me determine the pastor's standing prior to the actual review meeting. I think that this was the first time in over 15 years of using this questionnaire that each member of the board gave their pastor a perfect score in all thirty categories. It was a great review, indeed. During the past two years, Bowie has seen significant growth in attendance and finances and several community-outreach ministries that have led to conversions and baptisms. They also host a Hispanic congregation, led by Pastor Manuel Rodriquez.  In addition, I'm pleased to report that, during the review, the board voted to give Pastor Holmgren, who is bi-vocational and drives to Ft. Worth daily, a very substantial raise. God is good!

I am pleased that Pastors Steve and Amanda Pettit will be moving back onto our district in a few weeks upon the completion of their missionary contracts in Dominica. They will be working in the Ft. Worth area to enhance compassionate ministry and international outreach. Currently, they are doing deputation around our district and are enjoying great success. They stopped by the district office today on their way to Abernathy for a service this evening. We love the Pettits and their precious kids! Welcome home!

Finally, I was so very pleased with the great participation in the Racial Reconciliation seminar held in Arlington this past Tuesday. Special thanks to Arlington First Church and Pastor Clint Benn for their gracious hosting of the event. Our presenter, Dr. Charles Christian, did a great job of helping those of us in the majority culture understand the perspective, in a radically incarnational manner, of those who are not. Special thanks also to our responding pastoral panel made up of Corey Jones, Victor Jackson, and Lynn Nichols (pictured here with Dr. Christian).
It became so apparent throughout our discussion that the answer is very spiritual... not simply political or legal. Though it is important that we acknowledge the nature of the problem with racism, the answer is found through the true fruit of the Spirit... Agape love... which breaks down all barriers. You can access Dr. Christian's PowerPoint by CLICKING HERE. The entire seminar will be available on our district website next week.

Let's be leaders and champions in the ministry of racial reconciliation. I was so blessed by Corey's story about watching his pastor/dad, Dr. Charles Jones, reach out to minorities in the church he pastored when Corey was a boy. Corey stood by his father's side once and heard a bigoted church member protest bitterly about the minority children who were being brought into the ministry of the church. Corey watched his dad, who is my revered predecessor, stand up with courage and dignity to the man, stating, "Next Saturday morning, why don't you ride with me into the neighborhoods where we minister to these precious kids and explain to them why they are not welcome to hear about Jesus (their only hope) in our church." The man was silenced, the ministry continued to flourish...and Corey grew up to be the pastor of a great congregation, which, incidentally, is extremely multicultural.

For you and with you,

Pastor David Downs

In Our Local Churches...

O n Sunday morning September 4th, Northside Church of the Nazarene in Fort Worth had the first "Worship In The Park" at White Branch Park near the church.  The goal was to be the church in the community.  This is one of our vision steps.  We prepared the congregation for about two months with sermons and sign up lists.

We prepared the community by passing out flyers at the park and bombarding Social Media with paid advertisements.  The plan was: worship from 10-11, cookout for our church, guests and those in the park from 11:30-12:30 and games for kids and adults from 12:30-2:00.  God blessed our effort and we had over two hundred in worship and many more in the cook out.

Many of our people went out into the park and invited people and kids to come over and eat with us.  Some were reluctant at first but when they smelled the cook out and saw the great selection of food they were won over.  Relationships were started with many people, most of whom do not attend church.  We are praying and believing that these relationships will produce new followers of Jesus Christ and family members for the church.  The following is a guiding principle for us.  "If coming to church doesn't equip us to be The Church, or if we are coming to church so often that we don't have time to be the church, then coming to church is violating the purpose of The Church."  (A sermon point from Pastor Lynn Nichols)

NMI

Dear Pastors and NMI Leaders:
September is Alabaster offering month.
Sometimes people feel disconnected from missions because they have never been on a mission trip, but the Alabaster offering is an opportunity for them to see their money at work in a very tangible way.

Alabaster is a wonderful way to provide buildings & land on the mission field.  It's  a perfect example of how God can take each of our little bits & multiply them. Find Alabaster resources by clicking the image on the left.

Remember, hosting Deputation Missionaries doesn't have to mean holding a service in your sanctuary. You can take them to dinner or invite them to join in whatever your church enjoys - a game night or a picnic... get creative! DO allow your people (especially children and youth) time to interact with them and get to know them!

We are exploring new possibilities for 2018 Deputation Tours. In the future, if your church would like to host missionaries as part of a zone service or group of churches, please let us know! We plan tours 1 - 2 years ahead, so we need your feedback now for future tours.

Blessings,

Cheryl Crouch, WT NMI President
