Creativity Thrives at School 13

In January, Westhab opened the Bridge Academy, our newest after-school youth program at Public School 13 in Yonkers. As a NYS Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning Center program, Bridge Academy offers a variety of academic, arts and recreational activities through a unique "Extended Learning" model.

Youth counselors at the Bridge Academy work directly with teachers at School 13 to plan activities that directly reinforce the academic material taught during the school day. Bridge also hosts monthly parent workshops for Spanish speaking parents focused on topics ranging from technology to utilizing community resources.

A highlight of the Bridge Academy is the visiting artist program from ArtsWestchester. Alexandra, a fifth grader, said she "found out how much she loved painting" after working with Miguel Cossio, a visiting visual artist who teaches acrylic painting techniques to participants. The program also offers workshops in modern dance and cartooning.

Tee Up for a Great Cause
Dear Friends,

There is a pride and a passion that comes with being a Westhabber and I have the opportunity to see it firsthand every day - from walking through our shelters and service programs to seeing our back office staff burn the midnight oil to meet a deadline at our central offices in Yonkers. It is humbling to work with such a committed and talented team... and these efforts bring real results.

While we continue to lead the County in moving homeless households to permanent housing, placing public assistance recipients into jobs, and serving young people that would otherwise fall through the cracks, we are also moving towards breaking ground on 4 real estate developments which will add nearly 200 units of sorely needed affordable housing in Westchester and the Bronx. Expect to hear more on these as our efforts move forward throughout the year.

Thank you to all of those who joined us for our Race & Roll event on May 2, as well as everyone who helps and supports the organization in so many different ways throughout the year.

Take care,

Donors Race and Roll to Support the Homeless

Racers strapped into their carts with the focus of Dale Earnhardt at Westhab's 6th Annual Race & Roll event, which took place last Friday at Grand Prix Spins Bowl. With your help, the event raised over $60,000 to support our mission.

On behalf of our clients, we sincerely thank everyone who participated or donated to this year's Race & Roll, and we look forward to seeing you at the track next year!

Photos of this year's exciting
Race & Roll are posted on Westhab's Facebook Page, which you can find here:

Meet Your Neighbor

On Wednesday, April 9th, residents and service providers packed the gymnasium at Westhab's Elm Street Youth Center (ESYC) - located at 85 Linden Street in downtown Yonkers - to participate in Westhab's 3rd Annual Meet Your Neighbor event.

Coordinated and hosted by the ESYC and Westhab's Elm Street Community Resource Center, Meet Your Neighbor is a great opportunity for residents of southwest Yonkers to come together and learn about the services and resources available in the community. Among other things, attendees took part in on-site health screenings, a fire safety presentation from the Yonkers Fire Department, and exciting performances from local youth groups.
