What Does It Mean to be an Entrepreneur?

It's easy to call yourself an entrepreneur these days, but what does it really mean to be one? What does the entrepreneur see that no one else sees? What sets them apart from the crowd of start-ups and upstarts? What is the entrepreneur actually working for? This week's video features some reflections on the character and tenacity of the entrepreneur.

Thank You for Attending The
7th Annual Burger Bash!

We promised a Chamber event like no other, and boy, did our our Ambassadors deliver. This past Tuesday in the green space at the Best Western PLUS The Inn at Franciscan Square, over 125 people sang and danced through dinnertime with games, music, and the most decadent, calorie-laden burgers this side of Guy Fieri.

The Chamber would like to offer its most heartfelt thanks to Nicole Adamski, secretary of the Ambassador Club, Chris Orris, chairman of the Ambassador Club and the entire Burger Bash committee. Their hard work ensured that this annual event was a rousing success and that the newly formed "Anita Jackson Community Service Scholarship" received the support it needed.  It will continue to fund two scholarships for students who will be graduating from a Jefferson County high school and continuing their education at either Eastern Gateway Community College or Franciscan University of Steubenville.

"Thanks to Nicole and Chris' passion, we not only had a fun evening, but we also honored Anita's memory and her passion for education and community service," Tricia Maple-Damewood, Chamber president, said. "That means a lot to the Chamber and to our ongoing efforts to provide our members with events that are different from the usual business functions."

Celebrating Flag Day
"The flag of the United States has not been created by rhetorical sentences in declarations of independence and in bills of rights. It has been created by the experience of a great people, and nothing is written upon it that has not been written by their life. It is the embodiment, not of a sentiment, but of a history..."

Ohio Judge Strikes Law Preventing Patchwork of Local Labor Ordinances

Last week, a Franklin County Common Pleas Court Judge  struck  portions of  Senate Bill 331 , passed last legislative session during lame duck, that prohibited localities from enacting labor laws ranging from higher minimum wage to mandated paid sick leave. Citing a violation of the “single subject” provision of Ohio’s Constitution, the Judge kept in place the underlying bill dealing with the regulation of pet stores and other animal related provisions but struck those concerning oversight of micro-wireless equipment and local labor laws.

The Ohio Chamber supported both the underlying bill, which provides regulatory consistency for pet stores, that was kept intact and the amendments added to the bill, including preemption of a number of local labor laws. The amendment was added in response to a growing number of local ballot issues and ordinances imposing employment-related mandates on private sector businesses. The added provisions preempted the patchwork of burdensome regulations. Read the article in its entirety by clicking here.

Trump Takes Infrastructure Message to Ohio

President Donald Trump traveled to Ohio to pitch rebuilding America’s infrastructure, declaring "We will fix it. We will create the first-class infrastructure our country and our people deserve."

On Bloomberg, Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) commended the Trump administration’s emphasis on infrastructure improvements:

"Our ports are in need of help. Our airports are in need of help. So, I’m encouraged by what I see."

The business community, understanding that improved highways, airports, waterways, and other infrastructure will mean a stronger economy, is also behind the push. U.S. Chamber Executive Director for Transportation Infrastructure Ed Mortimer, said in a statement:

"We applaud President Trump and his administration for leading the conversation this week on an issue of critical importance to our 21st century economy: rebuilding America's infrastructure." Read the article in its entirety by clicking here.

Donald Duck made his big-screen debut in the Silly Symphonies short, "The Wise Little Hen." His first starring role would come three years later in 1937's Don Donald. The foul-tempered fowl would go on to become one of Walt Disney's most popular (and profitable) characters, appearing in scores of animated shorts and television series, including this summer's DuckTales, along with countless toys, video games, and comic books.
