If you were a fan of the Olympics, you couldn't miss all the discussion regarding Michael Phelps and cupping!  In the past few weeks, we've had more than a few clients ask us about cupping - do we use cups here at MTC?  Is it a good thing to do?

Cupping therapy goes back thousands of years primarily in Egypt, Greece and China.   In Traditional Chinese Medicine, stationary cups are placed on the skin and left for a period of five to fifteen minutes, and the cups may also be moved over the area to raise "sha".  The goal of Chinese cupping therapy is to move stagnation of blood and chi, disperse internal heat, and other applications based on Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnostics.
Originally, fire was used to create the necessary vacuum in the cup before placing it on the body. The practitioner lit up a cotton ball on a metal stick, quickly placed it inside the glass cup and, within seconds, the fire had consumed all the oxygen inside the cup. When the cup was immediately placed on the body, it sucked the skin into the cup.

Later, cups with a valve on top and a pumping device to pump out air from inside were developed, enabling practitioners to have more control over the intensity of the pressur
e during cupping. However, the rims of cups made from glass or hard plastic are inflexible, which unnecessarily traumatizes the soft tissue in the areas where cupping is applied.  This is what caused the purple bruising you saw on Michael Phelps.

We do using cupping in sessions when we think it's appropriate to help move deeper fascia and muscle tissue that is not responding to other techniques.  We prefer moving silicone cups that are soft. Before applying the cup, we administer oil or lotion to facilitate smooth movement, since the cup is kept active and is not left stationary on the client's body. This form of cupping rarely leaves marks on your skin and can be very effective for deep tissue work.  Don't hesitate to ask your therapist about cupping if you have any questions!

Welcome Donna at the Front Desk
Donna Koehnen
Saturdays are busy at MTC and we have been looking for just the right person to add to the front desk.  Donna joined MTC in August and we're so glad to have found her, not just for Saturdays but also on Tuesdays.

Donna's impressive resume includes experience in customer service, office administration, marketing, management and sales support.  Having Donna also allows flexibility when Jenna needs time off.  She loves the MTC atmosphere and looks forward to meeting you when you come in!
Important Announcements
Expanded Saturday and Sunday Coverage

You may already know we are open seven days a week.  To make it even easier for busy people to get their massages, we've added more options on Sundays with three and sometimes four therapists working.  On Saturdays, we've added a second shift with two or more therapists.  If you have trouble getting in during the week, or simply woke up with a stiff neck or sore back on the weekend, we can now accommodate more appointments - often the same day you call!
One Month Left for
Summer Medical Massage Clinic

September is the last month we'll take new clients in our Summer Medical Massage Clinic program.  You don't have to be a new client to MTC, just someone who needs to address a chronic or acute pain issue.  The pricing is significantly discounted from regular Medical Massage session costs, and  you get the initial consultation/ assessment for free with no obligation to continue!

We hoped to have our bumper sticker selections completed by now but it's still a work in progress.   Save a spot on your car bumper for some cool stickers that you can purchase to help fund our Pay It Forward program!

Speaking of the Pay It Forward program, Dan Shulman has once again donated a beautiful, hand-made wooden bowl (shown here).   The last set he brought in did not last long!  The suggested donation price is $40 - $60 with 100% of the purchase deposited in the Pay It Forward fund.  This fund is used for those in need of Medical Massage or Lymphedema Therapy who otherwise would not be able to afford the sessions.  Thanks so much to Dan for his continued support!

Skin Care A(always) B(beautiful) C(complexions)
September is a time of transition and new beginnings.  Summer has waned, school begins and the stirring of change is felt by everyone.
With that in mind, we are beginning a new series titled Skin Care ABC's.  We will be going back to school to review the basics of skin care for a beautiful, healthy look!
So, let's begin at the beginning and that would mean cleansing.  Proper cleansing is probably the most important element of our ABC's.  It prepares the skin and makes it more receptive to whatever follows.  So how do we get optimal results?  ......

Save 10% off the cleanser
of your choice all this month,
just by telling us you saw it here!

In Appreciation
Recently, we've had good news and bad news.  First, the bad news.  On Sunday August 21st, sometime in the middle of the night, most of our beautiful flowers and chair on the office front porch were stolen.  And the good news?  Within several hours of posting this event on our Facebook page, we had two separate deliveries of new plants for the porch!  Have we mentioned lately that we have the best clients anywhere??

Like many of you, in July and August most of our therapists took some much-needed time off!  We also value summer because it gives us a little more time for in-house training, study and practice.  But this month brings the official start of fall, and we are gearing up for busier months ahead.  We can't wait to share with you all the great things to come!

In appreciation,

Shea and Nancy
