Loving, gentle and kind. . .character that makes a difference in a life.
What are the Essentials of Life?
When I was hungry, you gave me something to eat,
and when I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink.
When I was a stranger, you welcomed me,
and when I was naked, you gave me clothes to wear.
When I was sick, you took care of me,
and when I was in jail, you visited me.

A Living Essential

Many of the women who find their way to Durango Pregnancy Center have stories as far from our own as can be imagined. Jail time, homelessness, abuse, neglect and the list goes on. We can talk all we want about baby and his or her welfare but if we do not first address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the woman in front of us, the mother, the prospect of her baby remains uncertain.

These last few weeks several of our women have given birth and we have witnessed the physical, emotional and spiritual change in each of them. Introducing their baby to us their common reflection is, "I can't believe she is mine." The wonder that this baby represents 40 weeks of in utero growth is significant; opening up a world that they never imagined.

Respecting and valuing life is about looking at the whole not simply a part. Finding the essentials of living for each woman can be challenging. Housing, medical care, food, clothing, employment. . .all become hurdles to jump in order to provide a life that is caring and safe.

Durango Pregnancy Center strives to discover the needs and provide the essentials.

Essentials that Make a Difference

Over the course of this last year I have spent time listening and talking with one of our women who I have known for almost four years. But, it wasn't until recently that my listening finally translated some very specific words. Coming in one day she tearfully told me about trying to get her driver's permit. She had tried two times and failed. Struggling to understand how this could be I said, "Forgive me for asking, but do you know how to read?" "No," came her reply.

Her inability to drive affected where she lived, her employment, medical care, grocery shopping; she had to be able to walk or take the bus. But she had to know how to read to get a simple driver's permit! Reading! It is a life essential!

Finding a reading tutor for her, I sat in my office and listened as week after week the words took on meaning for her. I had never heard her laugh. Her laughter during these weeks increased! She started reading to her daughter! She found joy!

A couple of weeks ago she walked in with a huge smile, "I got my driver's permit!" This permit represents independence but also confidence in her ability to provide the essentials for herself and her little girl.

This relationship taught me a critical lesson. What seems simple and common place to me can, in fact, be a huge hurdle to others. When I didn't know how to read, you taught me.
