Quick Fact
Hallullas

The "hallulla" (a-YU-ya) is one of the typical breads of Chile. It is often enjoyed for the evening "once". The "once" is a light meal in which the hallulla is the centerpiece. People eat the hallulla with cheese or cold cuts; or with a sweet spread such as jam or dulce de leche; or just with butter. Chileans seem to prefer their breads well toasted, often taking out and discarding the soft and yummy inside of the bread! If you want to try making hallullas, click here for a recipe.

Prayer Requests

*  Give thanks to God for Andrea (we requested prayers for her last month). She has since joined out adult instruction class!

*  Continue to pray for Maria and Luisa, as the Spirit continues to work in their hearts and lives. They recently completed an evangelistic Bible class.

*  Praise God for successful surgery on our daughter Nika's foot. The surgeon said it was the worst case he had seen. Ouch!

* Pray for Nika's healing. She is in a lot of pain.

*  Pray for daughters Soni and Gabi, as both begin a new school year as Lutheran school teachers.

*  Son Ben returned to college last weekend for his senior year. Pray that he is able to "finish strong".

*  Pray for the Ladies of Chile who were touched by the Gospel at the recent Chile Lutheran Ladies gathering! (see article).
* Pray for travelling mercies for Jim, as he will be on the road in September fulfilling his duties as Director of Global Lutheran Outreach:
  + 9/5 - Uruguay mission forum
  + 9/9 - GLO board meeting, Miami
  + 9/29 - missionary visit, Paraguay.
  * Praise God for new
GLO missionaries Ted and Cassandra Fischer! They will be serving in Guatemala.

What does sitting have to do with evangelism? That is a question I pondered recently as I read this from the book of Acts:
"Do you understand what you are reading?" asked Philip. "Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?" responded the Ethiopian. And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. (Acts 8:30-31)
The Holy Spirit brought Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch together at just the right moment, when the Ethiopian was ready to learn about God from His Word. What joy must have filled Philip's heart when he was invited to "sit with him"! It seems to me that this is what evangelism is all about - allowing the Spirit to direct your steps, meeting people, and then waiting to be invited to sit with them and share the Good News of Jesus. I hope you enjoy reading about some of the ways that we are sitting with the people of Chile, and as you do so, ask yourself: Is there someone who wants me to sit with them?
Sitting with the Poor
In partnership with the Lutheran Hour - Chile, every Tuesday we do evangelism outreach at the "Consultorio Maffioletti", which is a public health clinic. Such clinics provide low-cost or free medical care to those of lower income levels. We set up a small table with a display of the Lutheran Hour  folletos (booklets). Each  folleto

discusses a  topic of interest from a Christian perspective, and we offer a free booklet to anyone who stops to ask for one. Lots of interesting conversations ensue, and sometimes Jim is asked to "sit with them" by visiting in their homes, where he shares the Good News of the One sits by our side!
Help! I have an English exam!
Since that is a common plea among students in all levels of education here in Chile, Liisa decided to start an English class. Sofía, a highschool freshman from our church, spread the news around to her friends: there will be free English classes focusing on conversation and support for the materials they are studying at school. After 3 weeks, we have nine participants. The classes are interactive and enjoyable, and Sofía is excited about introducing her friends to our church community. As Liisa sits with them, she looks for opportunities to present the Gospel in each lesson. Pray that some of these students will come to a worship service and that the power of God's Word will begin to change their lives!

Sitting at the Feet of Jesus

Originally, Liisa thought of the Chilean Lutheran National Women's Gathering as a "insiders" type of event - you know, for Lutherans only. Therefore, as our mission congregation in Santiago spent dozens of hours preparing the details for hosting this one-day event, she began to wonder if it was really worth it...and it was! Among the 60 ladies that attended, 4 were new contacts that Jim invited personally. They were touched by the Word preached, shared, and lived by the leaders and the dozens of Lutheran women who hugged them and talked about their faith. Women from five other cities in Chile attended as well, and some of them brought guests, as well.
The men did anything but sit! Six men from our church plus Pastor Cristian and Pastor Jim took care of all the meals and coffee breaks. They chopped and cooked and served and cleaned and even helped to take care of the 15 or so children that were also there! It was a time of growing in faith and as a community of believers.
Lastly, the women began organizing themselves for service on a national level. Throughout the day, we heard people sharing ideas on how to be involved in God's mission. The women took on the challenge of gathering "mites", or "el vuelto" as they call it here, to support the deaconess working in Constitucion. Pray for this fledgling women's organization goes from "sitting" to standing so that more and more women will sit at the feet of Jesus!
