Gramercy Park Neighbor James Harper


Mayor of New York 1844-45

Established first municipal police force in 1844

Harper lived at 4 Gramercy Park West from 1847 until his death in 1869. The two gas lanterns, which adorned all New York mayors' residences for life, are still there.
