Socrates Coffee House

"A delightful and entertaining little venue with Coffee & Tea, Breakfast & Brunch, Sandwiches"

A European coffee house specializing in espresso drinks. We also sell tea, beer, root beer, apple cider and other juices, pastries, bagels, and our own breakfast burritos (distinguished by its Middle Eastern recipe rather than the traditional Mexican recipe). On occasion we also offer for public consumption poetry readings, comedy, and music. We offer atmosphere peculiar to the coffee house tradition of the 1960s after which our coffee house is dedicated; it was inspired by the Prison of Socrates coffee house that was in operation in Balboa, CA, from 1959 to 1969.

Wine FAQs

Clinking Etiquette: Are You Kidding Me!?

If you’re already laughing at how ridiculous this is, imagine yourself holding a fine crystal glass filled with very expensive wine. Upon clinking, the rim of the glass shatters and the wine spills out with broken crystal glass everywhere. Egads! Your delicious wine is now full of broken glass. The table, as well as your lap, is now covered in wine.

The idea is that you aim your wine glass bell (the big round part in the middle) to the bell of your clinking-buddy’s wine glass. Upon contact the glass lets out a long sustained “DING!” which causes everyone to look around to see who knows how to party.

  1. Find a clinking buddy
  2. Angle wine glass slightly so that the bells line up and the rim is away from your partner
  3. Clink wine glasses together and listen for sustained ring
  4. Find another clinking buddy

Homeownership in the Crosshairs of Latest Tax Plan, Say REALTORS®

WASHINGTON (April 26, 2017)

Major reforms are needed to lower tax rates and simplify the tax code, but that shouldn’t come at the expense of current and prospective homeowners.

National Association of Realtors® President William E. Brown issued the following statement:

“For over a century, America has committed itself to home ownership with targeted tax incentives that help lower- and middle-class families purchase what is likely their largest asset.... "

“Targeted tax incentives are in place to help people get there. The mortgage interest deduction and the state and local tax deduction make home ownership more affordable... "

“Those tax incentives are at risk in the tax plan released today. Current homeowners could very well see their home’s value plummet and their equity evaporate if tax reform nullifies or eliminates the tax incentives they depend upon, while prospective home buyers will see that dream pushed further out of reach..."

“It’s a goal we share with the authors of this tax plan, but getting there by eliminating the incentives for home ownership is the wrong approach...”

William E. Brown

Local Real Estate Viewpoint

By: Ron Johnson
There are differing opinions of how the proposed Tax Cuts will affect real estate across the country, but real estate is local. It will have an effect in California. With a median price home in San Mateo costing over $1.5 million, any additional taxes on the mortgage interest and taxes will have some impact. It can be expected to have an impact locally as well.

Where is America Moving ?

"Are you planning to move in 2018? Check out this interactive map for migration trends."

Since January 1993, Atlas Van Lines has reviewed and released data on the origins and destinations of interstate (between states) moves throughout the previous calendar year. The 2016 Migration Patterns study results provide a snapshot of relocation patterns. This year, 26 states registered as balanced—meaning that moves in and out of the states were roughly equal—15 as outbound, and 9 as inbound, in addition to Washington, D.C. Furthermore, the data showed the overall number of moves was down from 2015.

While the Western states experienced no classification changes from 2015 to 2016, the region did have the state with the highest percentage of inbound moves in the country, with Idaho registering 63 percent of moves entering the state. The region also registered Wyoming with the highest percentage of outbound moves in the U.S., with 63 percent of moves exiting the state.
