News from the Rectory
We hope everyone's new year has gotten off to a fabulous start!  In the church calendar there really isn't a post-Christmas let down -- all the meetings and gatherings that were on hiatus during the holidays rev up again and, of course, there is always the Annual Meeting.  This year Andrew and Anita, along with the other members of the Strategic Long-term Planning Committee, worked on preparations for the presentation of the strategic plan to the congregation at Annual Meeting.

Anita also worked on displays for Youth Ministry, Friday Morning Women's Bible Study, and the Women's Lenten Retreat for the Ministry Fair.  Lots of exciting work, to be sure!  At the Rectory, we hosted the Friday Bible Study group for a session for our current study, a DVD series entitled "Twelve Women of the Bible".  Reminder -- all women of the church are warmly invited to join our group!

February will bring fresh excitement as we prepare to host the opening reception for our progressive dinner.  We love the Academy Award theme and think this will definitely be a festive event!  This year the hors d'oeuvres are being sponsored by a generous parishioner and we are providing the gathering space.  This means a lot less cooking/prep for us, but maybe we will slip in a favorite item or two!  And, believe it or not, another Newcomers Reception is also on the calendar for February.

May God's love surround and uplift you during this month!

Christ's Peace,

The Sherman Family
From Tim Brumfield, Director of Music Ministries
If you missed Evensong on Sunday evening, you really missed a beautiful service!  I would like to thank the members of the Choir for their hard work and dedication in putting together these extra Evensong services.  The music is very challenging but also rewarding as well.  I would like to thank Chase Wheeler and Jonathan Cornell for their beautiful duet on the Nunc Dimittis and to Jonathan for his superb chanting of the Preces and Responses.  Our next service of Evensong will be February 26 at 5 PM.

And, you may have noticed at the 10 AM service on Sundays a new musical item at the beginning of Communion known as the Communion Proper. A Proper is simply a collect or prayer assigned for the day.  During Epiphany, the same proper is applied from Epiphany III until Ash Wednesday.  These Communion Propers are traditionally sung to Gregorian Chant and are taken directly from the Liber Usualis, a book of Gregorian Chants for use every Sunday of the liturgical year.  My sincere gratitude and appreciation goes to Jonathan Cornell and Chase Wheeler for so beautifully chanting the Communion Propers each Sunday and for helping to create an atmosphere of prayerful meditation as Communion is received.

Our Concert Series continues with the incredible talent of jazz legend Wycliffe Gordon who will be with us on February 12 at 4 PM!!  If you haven't heard his last two concerts, you MUST attend this one!  Wycliffe brings his Dixieland style of jazz home to St. Gregory's for a third consecutive year!  You will be blown away by his incredible music, his showmanship, and his love for what he does.  There are times when you can actually hear the trombone talk!  He'll be bringing some of the finest jazz players in country to be with him including a twin brother saxophone duo called the Anderson Twins who are graduates of the Juilliard School in New York. A devout man of faith, Wycliffe especially enjoys being with us here at St. Gregory's as he feels like he's coming home.  We are so very fortunate that he has agreed to be with us once again.

On March 5, I'm extremely excited to present the Florida Singing Sons and the Girls Choir of South Florida in a rare joint concert performing Faure's Requiem.  They will be under the expert direction of the very talented Mr. Brett Karlin, Artistic Director and Conductor of The Singing Sons and of The Master Chorale of South Florida.  Brett is one of the country's top young conductors and we are very fortunate to be able to host this incredible concert featuring South Florida's very own!!  And, I'll be accompanying on the organ.  Don't miss this concert!

Remember, this is YOUR music program and YOUR concert series!  A successful music ministry requires much work and dedication from all those who participate but also support from you, the church.   I invite you to become a Friend of Great Music of St. Gregory's today!  To learn more about how to support the music ministry of St. Gregory's, contact me or Ron Knowlton in the church office.

PS:

CHORISTERS

Does you child like to sing?  If so, Choristers is just the place!!  This ensemble meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:15 in the choir room and is open to children in grades 3-8.  They not only learn to sing, but have fun learning the rudiments of music from theory to how to listen to music.

MUSIC ACADEMY

If you or your child is interested in studying piano, voice, organ, or another instrument, St. Gregory's Music Academy is the place for you!  Our professional staff of instructors will work with you according to your proficiency level and accept students from beginning to advanced.

Let's continue making beautiful music together!

Peace, Tim

Father Andrew has started his five week discussion of Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury's book,"Being Christian."

In this simple, beautifully written book Rowan Williams explores four essential components of the Christian life: baptism, Bible, Eucharist, and prayer. Despite huge differences in Christian thinking and practice, these four basic elements have remained constant and indispensable for the majority of those who call themselves Christians.  All are welcome.

The ECW will now meet on a monthly basis
We are happy to report that the ECW kickoff meeting and potluck lunch went very well and was well attended.  We had close to 40 women attend of all ages who were excited about what the future would look like.  Some decisions were made and we would like to share some of these.  The meeting began with prayer and a formal welcome from Pastor Angela who helped facilitate the first meeting.

The mission and goals of the ECW were discussed as well as several ideas as to future fundraisers and events that the women would like to have in the future. Several women volunteered to help lead the ECW and we will vote and approve them at the next meeting.

The ECW will now meet on a monthly basis.  We will gather every first Thursday of the month at 6PM for a potluck dinner and meeting in Harris Hall.  Our next meeting will be held on March 2nd.  At this meeting will be vote for our new leadership, review our financials and make plans for our upcoming events and fundraising opportunities.

It was decided that we will continue having our tea and the next tea will be held on Saturday, April 8th at 2 PM.  Ideas are still floating around but one that gathered much excitement from the group was to have a Fashion Tea.  The cost of the tea will be $25.00 and is open to any and all who want to attend.  Tables will be decorated and much fun will be had.

If you did not attend the meeting and would like to be included in communications about the ECW, it's meetings and future events please contact Pastor Angela so she can add you to the email and call list.  Again ECW is open to all women of the church regardless of age.  By virtue of being a part of St. Gregory's you are invited to be part of this wonderful group of faithful women.  Hope to see you at our next meeting.

Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn  but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the  strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that  all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of  Peace, as children of one Father; to whom be dominion and  glory, now and for ever.
Amen.
