OCDCA is issuing a call for nominations for the annual Ohio CDC Association member awards, sponsored by Chase Bank.These awards recognize CDCs, their staff and volunteers, projects, partners and advocates who have made exemplary contributions to the community development field. Winners will be announced at the 32nd Annual Conference at the Member Awards Reception on Thursday, October 13th in Athens. Nominations accepted until August 10.

On July 27th at the Ohio Conference on Community Development (OCCD) summer meeting, OCDCA was honored to receive the 2016 Community Development Partner of the Year Award that recognizes exceptional support and contributions to the community development industry. We would like to thank OCCD for this recognition as we look forward to furthering community development collaborations and partnerships.
Universal Design = Good Design
OCDCA is pleased to provide this training in partnership with the Ohio Housing Finance Agency. Participants attending the training and tour of the Universal Design Living Laboratory will learn the philosophy of affordable universal design for single and multifamily housing development. Attendees will discover how to create accommodating design features that can be integrated into the overall design of an affordable home, resulting in a product that is usable by people with diverse abilities and is appealing and marketable to a wide audience.

Make Room Releases Findings on Ohio's Affordable Housing Crisis
Make Room has released a new analysis showing that nearly one in four renters living outside of Ohio's largest metropolitan areas - Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati - spend more than half their income on rent and utilities. Read more about the rental housing crisis in Ohio.

Symposium Will Advance Community Development and Health Partnerships
"Community Development & the Social Determinants of Health" will bring together members of the health and community development fields in Cleveland, Ohio on August 30. Hosted by the National Alliance of Community Economic Development Associations (NACEDA), the symposium will advance partnerships and strategies that improve health and wellness in low-income communities around the country. Participants will learn about the social determinants of health; concrete, successful models working in local communities; regional and national partnerships that can provide infrastructure and increase awareness; and key federal, state and local policies. The symposium is sponsored by the New Venture Fund with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Office of Refugee Resettlement Preferred Communities Program
The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) within the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) announces the availability of funds and award procedures for fiscal year 2017 under the Preferred Communities (PC) Program. The twin goals of the PC Program are: The successful resettlement and integration of especially vulnerable refugees (and other ORR client populations) and the enhancement of refugee service providers; capacity to serve such populations at new or established PC locations. Deadline is August 1.
Bloomberg Philanthropies: What Works Cities (Funding for Cities)

Brownfields Area-Wide Planning Grant
EPA grant funds are now available to fund research, technical assistance and/or training activities that facilitate the inventory of brownfields, site assessments, remediation of brownfields sites, community involvement or site preparation. Deadline is August 10.
Open Meadows Foundation Grants for Women and Girls
Open Meadows Foundation is a grant-making organization seeking projects that promote gender/racial/economic justice. The projects must be led by and benefit women and girls, particularly those from vulnerable communities. Grants are $2,000. Organizations with budgets that exceed $150,000 are not eligible. Deadline is August 15.

Healthy Food for Ohio Funds
Finance Fund Capital Corporation developed Healthy Food for Ohio (HFFO) to increase access to affordable, fresh food in underserved areas, improve the diets and health of Ohio residents, and spur economic development and revitalization. Grants and loans are available to fund costs associated with land acquisition, predevelopment, construction, equipment, infrastructure, and related expenses for new and existing facilities. Eligible applicants include grocery chains, individual grocery stores, neighborhood food stores, co-ops, and nontraditional food projects such as farmers markets and food hubs. Projects must operate in limited supermarket access areas in Ohio. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Request for Qualifications: OHFA Save the Dream Funds, Deadline is July 31
The Ohio Housing Finance Agency (OHFA) is seeking qualified HUD-Approved Counseling Agencies in Ohio to provide services to individuals or families participating in the HHF Homeowner Preservation Programs beginning September 26, 2016. Organizations interested in participating will be required to submit proof of HUD approval, a physical description of your operation including office type, machinery and staff and a statement disclosing what fees your office charges. All forms should be returned electronically to [email protected]. Only participating agencies will be eligible to receive referrals. The RFQ is due by July 31, 2016.
What is the "Benefit Cliff" in Ohio?
In some circumstances, even a small increase income causes a drop in the public benefits a family can receive, effectively increasing their expenses and hurting their ability to make ends meet. A new report from Community Solutions' Emily Campbell examines the "benefit cliff" in Ohio and finds some families have an economic disincentive to taking a raise or working more hours because of child care copayments and Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Federal News
As Appropriations Process Stalls, Congress Considers Duration of Continuing Resolution
Without having sent the president any appropriations bills this year, Congress is unlikely to make meaningful progress on the appropriations process in the final days before adjourning for August recess at the end of this week. When Congress returns after Labor Day, there will be only four weeks left before the end of the fiscal year on September 30, limiting the amount of time to negotiate an omnibus spending bill. Senators Introduce Second LIHTC Enhancement Bill, Includes Incentives for Deeper Targeting
Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced the "Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act of 2016" on July 14. This legislation includes comprehensive reforms to the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) to enable it to better serve extremely low-income and homeless families and rural and Native American communities. The bill is co-sponsored by Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-OR). Read more of this article here.
