The 1876 raid on the First National Bank of Northfield, Minn., nearly destroyed the James-Younger gang. Of the eight bandits, only Frank and Jesse James escaped death or capture. Jesse's escape from a posse over Devil's Gulch resulted in one of the greatest legends in South Dakota history. Wayne Fanebust of Sioux Falls, author of "Chasing Frank and Jesse James: The Bungled Northfield Bank Robber and the Long Manhunt" will tell about these events that made the James brothers legendary figures in American history and folklore. The free program is made possible by a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Seventh annual South Dakota Kite Day is Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at Hilger's Gulch in Pierre, South Dakota. The Seventh Annual South Dakota Kite Day is being held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Central Daylight Time and is sponsored by Pierre Elks Lodge Number 1953. Children, ages 14 and under, are encouraged to attend. The first 400 children will receive a free kite and a lesson on how to properly fly the kite. Elk's members will be available to hand out kites, offer assistance in putting them together and getting them to fly. Parents also are encouraged to get involved. There is no registration fee. But children are encouraged to register by going to the Elks' Facebook page. Kite Day is possible with financial support from the National Elk's Foundation and the Pierre Elk's Lodge #1953. Fitness in the Park is a free outdoor exercise program that brings a variety of fitness classes to many of Pierre's beautiful parks and recreation areas. Getting started is easy. Just pick a class you like and show up! There is no registration required and classes are open to all fitness levels. All ages welcome and no experience is necessary.

Classes are led by YMCA Health & Wellness instructors. Participants should dress comfortably and bring water.  In the event of bad weather classes will be held at the Y. Follow us on Facebook or download our free app for updates and special notices.

Trail of Governor Unveiling - William McMaster, Merrell Shape and Ralph Herseth

South Dakota Governors William McMaster, Merrell Sharpe, and Ralph Herseth will be honored with statues unveiled at the Capitol Rotunda at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018.

The three newest statues will be added to the trail that currently features 19 statues. McMaster served from 1921 to 1925 as the 10th governor. Sharpe was the 17th governor, serving from 1943 to 1947. Herseth served in office from 1959 to 1961 as the state's 21st governor.

Plan to Run with the Govs June 16, 2018 on a 4-mile trail that winds through the heart of South Dakota's capital city. The route features bronze statues of 19 former governors. Race through to see the highlights or stroll along the route to enjoy the artistry and stories of the state's legendary leaders. The race starts and finishes at the front steps of the beautiful State Capitol building. Participants of all ages are welcome, including kids in strollers and dogs on leashes. All registered racers/walkers will receive a t-shirt if registered by June 1st. Awards for the top male and female racers.

A grant from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) gave us a solution to this roadblock. Through this grant, Pierre Parks and Recreation will be able to offer the Arthritis Foundation's Walk With Ease (WWE) program to older adults in our community. The WWE program is a low-impact group-based walking program designed for people with arthritis, but anyone looking to incorporate physical activity into their lifestyle can participate, and it is especially great for older adults. The six-week program, which meets three times a week for an hour, includes more than just walking. It also includes time for stretching and cooling down exercises.

Thursday, June 21st is not only "The Longest Day" but it is also International Yoga Day. Celebrate both events by starting your day out with a 45-minute Sunrise Yoga session, on the front lawn of Edgewood. All skill levels welcome, class will be led by Gail Bowers with Ubuntu Yoga Center. There is no cost to attend, but a free will donation will be accepted. All proceeds benefit the Alzheimer's Association. In the event of inclement weather, the yoga session will be held indoors at Edgewood. What is "The Longest Day?" It is a day all about love - love for those affected by Alzheimer's disease. On the summer solstice, team up with Edgewood Senior Living and the Alzheimer's Association by participating in Sunrise Yoga, and other events during the day. Together, we will raise funds and awareness for care and support while advancing research toward the first survivor of Alzheimer's.

The Longest Day is a day dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the Alzheimer's Association. All pie contest team members will receive a "The Longest Day" t-shirt. The 5k and 10k courses wind through the open grass trails of LaFramboise Island in Pierre. Race participants can register at open grass trails of LaFramboise Island in Pierre. Oahe Chapel Ecumenical Sunday Worship Service

Services are hosted by the Pierre/Fort Pierre Ministerial Association and the Oahe Chapel Preservation Society.

  • Fees: $45 to ride, $10 per meal at post-race lunch.
Oahe Days Weekend - Featuring 3 scenic rides along the Oahe Dam.
Metric Century: (67 miles) Ride to the end of the road and back! This ride will feature a category 4 and a category 5 hill climb.
Medium Route : (40 miles) Take a tour of the Oahe Downstream Recreation area, ride across the face of the dam, and out to Chantier Creek and back on Hwy 1806.
Dam Fun Ride : (15 miles) Ride though the Oahe Downstream Recreation Area, ride across the face of the dam. Grab a friend and enjoy the ride!
Non-rider options : Purchase tickets for the post-race lunch. ($10 per meal through 6/16 at 11:59 pm)
Helmets are required on all riders.
