Harvesting Pumpkin Advice from Costello's Garden Center

Harvesting Pumpkins

The quintessential fall vegetable is, of course, the pumpkin. Pumpkins are fairly easy to grow, depending on variety. You can grow small tender pumpkins, all the way up to pumpkins that weigh over 200 pounds.

If foliage is shading the pumpkin, cut it back so that the pumpkin will ripen quicker.

Leave the pumpkin on the vine until it has reached the color you desire. Once it is picked, the color will stop developing.

Pumpkins are ready to be cut from the vine when a fingernail cannot penetrate the skin. Skin should feel hard, almost like a shell. Another sign the pumpkin is ready to be harvested is if the stem starts to crack.

If you don't want to cut the pumpkins, you can simply let the vine die back, cutting them at your leisure.

Wear gloves, the vines can be prickly. Use a sharp knife to cut pumpkins from the vines.

Try to leave a "handle" of at least 4" on the pumpkin.

Handle the pumpkins with care to avoid cuts and bruises.   And. NEVER carry pumpkins by their stems.

After cutting, expose your pumpkins to the sun for 10 days, to cure them. This hardens the skin so that it forms a barrier and loses moisture more slowly, making it last longer.

Store at 50 - 60 degrees. Do not stack pumpkins.

If you want to use your pumpkins immediately, go right ahead and enjoy.

The Vintage Atlantic Wine Region collaboration started in August 2013. The mission is to create a Wine Region that links existing wine trails and wineries in various states, ignoring state borders, that have common geography, climate and growing conditions, for the collective benefit of promoting those trails, together with the Region's other historical and tourism assets within and beyond this Region. This Region would include the area around the Delaware Bay and lower Delaware River, up to and including the Philadelphia Metro Area.
