What is the Bible?

I frequently am asked about what I am reading.  This past week, I just started a new book.  It is titled, "What is the Bible?" by Rob Bell (pictured above).  Now, if you have ever talked to me about faith, and life and church or heard some of my sermons, you will know that I reference Rob's work and he has been very influential on me.  What I appreciate about Rob, is that he reinforces much of what I learned in seminary, but he is able to articulate ideas and thoughts in much plainer language.  He makes things much more accessible to everyone.

This is exactly what he does in his new book.  This isn't a book telling you what to believe about the Bible, but rather he is helping you to learn how to read the Bible.  He does not want someone just to be able to regurgitate or memorize talking points to sound intelligent, rather the point of this book is to be able to learn how to engage the Bible in new ways.  Reading the Bible is not trying to "learn the lesson" from a passage, but rather it is about understanding about what it means to be fully human .  It is messy and hard and exciting and scary and thrilling.  Hopefully, we will all find it good.  Rob is helping all people, Christians and non Christians alike, learn how to read this ancient collection of books in their proper context and to see how we really are not all that different.  They have the same struggles that we do, we just can't always see it because we get caught up in their culture that we don't understand.

In this book, Rob is very real and doesn't try and phrase things in polite ways.  If the passage is dealing with sex, he comes right out and says it.  This might be a little shocking for some people.  Most of us are accustomed to sanitizing passages to make them either easier to read or more "appropriate."  I don't think Rob has any time for this.  When we sanitize we miss the depth of the passage and what is actually happening in it.

Here are links to 2 videos that Rob did about the book.  The first is a short promo video, a commercial.  The second is a podcast that is also live streamed with Doug Padgitt.  Doug is a pastor in the Twin Cities area that is also heavily engaged in re-imagining faith and church.

You can find the book on amazon or in any book store.  I encourage you to check in out and see what happens to how you read the Bible and understand our faith.

Readings for this Week

Here are this week's readings. Sermon and scripture retention and application on Sunday morning jumps dramatically for those who read and engage the scripture during the week prior. (Click on the readings to find them online or use your Bible.)

Questions for John 17:1-11

1. Jesus is very connected to God, the Father, in this passage.  Describe a time in which you felt very connected to God?

2.  How do you define the word "glory."  Do you define it the same way Jesus is using it here?  How is Jesus using the word, "glory."

3.  In this passage, Jesus prays for those who believe, that they may be one.  Do you view the church as united?  Why or why not?  In what ways do you see a united church?  In what ways do you see a divided church?
