Life moves pretty fast...
It is summertime. I love it. The days are longer. The nights are warmer. Schedules change. Road trips are taken. The lemonade is a little colder (or insert your favorite "adult" beverage). And hammocks swing gently in the breeze.
At least, that is the hope, isn't it. But it doesn't always turn out that way. Schedules do change, but it goes from one type of activity to another activity. The nights are warmer, but that means the activity our kids are participating in can go longer. The lemonade might be colder, but it probably isn't lemonade, it is some other drink that we got in the drive-thru or the gas station as we were driving to the next place we had a meeting or had to pick someone up.
We have hopes that things will slow down, but much of the time, that isn't the case. Summer has become a time, like the rest of life, that we fill with things that we think we should do, or that everyone else is doing. The 3 months go by in an instant and next thing you know it is September and the transition is happening again and we have to rush out to Target to buy school supplies and are wondering what happened to my summer and wasn't I just doing this last month (even though it was really last year)?!
I hope you will take time to rest this summer. I hope you carve out time to do nothing except lay on the hammock or sit in a chair, or float in a pool and enjoy a cold drink of your choice.
You might now the phrase, "The days are long but the years are short." I think it originated by parents (specifically moms) who were home with kids just trying to get through the day. I have noticed that the older I get, I want to change the phrase to the following, "The days are short and so are the years." Time just seems to be moving faster.
I know as followers of Jesus, we have plenty of work to do. But so often we don't do the work because we are to busy in our lives going from one thing to the the next. I believe that if we stop, and look around once in a while, we will have a greater appreciation for the beauty of the world and all that is in it and it will provide greater motivation to participate in God's renewing work of the entire cosmos.
So, stop what you are doing, cancel that meeting or skip the practice, and breathe. Breathe in God's love, creation and air. Notice the beauty of all that is around you and drink in all that is good. This summer, let all of that fill your lungs and your heart and your soul.
The video above is from the classic movie, "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." He says, "Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Let's not miss the life that God offers us by just being busy.
Have a great day,
Pastor Tim
