"When you look at a field of dandelions, you can either
see a hundred weeds or a hundred wishes...."
~Author Unknown

Vacations are great to take, but it is also wonderful to return home!  Our family journeyed to one of the best kept secrets in the Lutheran Church - Holden Village, nestled in the Cascade Mountains of north central Washington.  It is an intentional community that welcomes all people, offers Christian programming and worship, and many other opportunities for, family fun, hiking, arts and crafts, as well as being off the grid, to dwell with one another in God's creation.

The mission of Holden Village, a Lutheran ministry, is to welcome all people into the wilderness to be called, equipped and sent by God as we share rhythms of Word and Sacrament; work, recreation, and study; intercession and healing.   For more about their mission and core values - visit http://www.holdenvillage.org/about-us/mission-core-values/

Many people have asked about our time away and I share it is exactly what a vacation should be, time spent together as family to connect or reconnect, so that I can be the best husband and father I can be and to share some great experiences.  It also helps me to be a better pastor as I attended some of the programming ranging from Bible, to the environment, to social awareness, and even community building activities.  In the coming weeks, I plan to share a presentation about Holden, what it looks like, what it's about, and present an opportunity for people to go to Holden in 2018.  If you are interested, be watching for an
opportunity to attend!

Jesus' Parable of the Weeds (Matthew 13: 24-30, 34-43), reminds me of the questions we wrestle with at Holden Village.  What does it mean to live among the weeds and remain faithful to God?  How is God's word lived out in our lives when we face difficult decisions, when we don't know what to do, or when God's message seem opposite of what this world is telling us to value?  This Sunday is an opportunity for us to discuss and understand better the message God has for us.  See you for worship!

God's Peace,
Pastor Nate

Readings for this Week

Here are this week's readings. Sermon and scripture retention and application on Sunday morning jumps dramatically for those who read and engage the scripture during the week prior. (Click on the readings to find them online or use your Bible.)

Questions for Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43
Parable of the Weeds

1.     What is the Kingdom of Heaven like, for you?

2.     What do we do with weeds in our yard or garden?  How might this parable help us understand the weeds we live amongst in this world?

3.     Jesus speaks to the crowds, but when he and the disciples entered a house the disciples said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field."  What questions do you have about God that you haven't asked?

4.     The Kingdom of Heaven is not so much a geographical place, but more a spiritual realm.  How is the Kingdom of Heaven evident to you here and now?

5.     Which kingdom will prevail, the Roman/earthly kingdom? or God's kingdom?
