Mother's Day is around the corner! I believe Mother's Day is a day for all women, no matter their status, age, or experience. All women share a "mothering" presence. The intention for having Mother's Day was and is important, but since its beginning in the early 1900's and official national holiday status given by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914, cultural sensitivity and understanding are different. Our world puts needless pressures on women already, and to exclude or put value on one verses the other can miss the point.
I look forward to Mother's Day because it gives an opportunity for our family to break from the ordinary daily expectations and be present with one another, and celebrate life. Mothers are human and aren't perfect and I know there are families who cannot come together, because there is conflict or the day is painful for various reason. I pray for health and healing in those situations.
I know I am fortunate to have a mother who has loved me unconditionally. Who taught me a lot verbally, as well as by example especially the importance of faith in Jesus Christ, encouraging me to be who I am, and offering hugs and kisses in the good and difficult times. I hope many of you can say the same of your mothers and I hope you can tell them too!
For all women, I hope your day is filled with refreshment, joy, and Sabbath rest from the duties and responsibilities you normally tend to. May your God given gifts abound by caring, sharing, welcoming, and giving of yourself in love.
Let us not forget God has mothering examples for us too. The Bible recognizes many ways God is described as a mother, such as giving birth, feeding, and countless other examples. Jesus describes himself as a mother hen protecting her chicks. The apostles speak of themselves as giving birth to and feeding the churches they founded. In the first nine chapters of the Old Testament book of Proverbs, it focuses on the feminine
Sophia
known as the wisdom of God. There are many other individual images, but this weekend let us be keen to hearing God's eternal love and mothering presence in our lives.
