Hey UU: What's Cooking?  #23
Tempeh Toss

Here is a recipe that is a great way to use up little bits of left over vegetables in your fridge and any leftover rice you may have.
Tempeh is made from cooked and slightly fermented soybeans and formed into a patty, similar to a very firm veggie burger.  It is found in the diary isle of most grocery stores. Tempeh is very high in protein and calcium, as well as beneficial isoflavones. , and tastes nothing like tofu. Tempeh has a textured and nutty flavor.

Ingredients:
Tempeh cubed
chopped carrots, broccoli, zucchini, mushrooms (whatever you have on hand)
Chopped onion or shallots
2 cloves Minced garlic
2 Tbsp Soy sauce
2 to 4 Tbsp oil
1 Tbsp red wine vinegar (or wine)
¼ C water
1 C or more of cooked rice
red pepper flakes to taste

Directions:
1. Brown the cubed Tempeh in oil in a large skillet or Wok.
2.  Add the Chopped Carrots, garlic, onions or shallots, red pepper flakes, and soy sauce.  Sauté until the carrots are tender but still firm.
3. Add ¼ Cup water, I Tbsp of red wine vinegar, Zucchini, red pepper and other softer veggies such as mushrooms, broccoli, spinach or kale.  Simmer 3-4 minutes, covered until the veggies are tender.
4.  Add the left over rice to the skillet and heat up together. Or heat rice separately and serve veggies on top of rice.

Please join us and turn our sadness of the news of Bethany's resignation into a celebration for her four years of dedication and service to this congregation. We are better for the time we've had with Bethany as our Director of Lifespan Faith Development and wish her a future where she continues grow while helping others on their spiritual journey.

Please bring a dish to share and if you are able please help in cleaning up as we have also invited Bob our custodian to join in the celebration.

GREATER HEIGHTS TIME BANK MEETING

The Greater Heights TimeBank is having a meeting at First Unitarian Church. Everyone is invited to learn more about the Time Bank.
Monday 9/26/2016 at 7:00 pm in Fellowship Hall There will be deserts and Coffee and Tea served. Feel free to bring a desert or snack to share.

What is a Time Bank?
A TimeBank is formed whenever individuals or organizations agree to earn and spend TimeBank Hours to meet the needs of friends, neighbors, and the larger community.

Time Banking is a way of giving and receiving to build supportive networks and strong communities. One hour helping another earns one TimeBank Hour (also called time credits, service credits or time dollars.) TimeBanking builds on the magic of "pay it forward," one good turn leading to another and another.

Here is how it works: I earn a time credit by doing something for you. It doesn't matter what that "something" is. You turnaround and earn a time credit doing something for someone else in your TimeBank Community. For example, an hour of gardening equals an hour of child-care equals an hour of dentistry equals an hour of home repair equals an hour of teaching someone to play chess. The possibilities are endless.
DEFYING THE NAZIS POTLUCK, VIEWING AND DISCUSSION
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH

Whether or not you saw Defying the Nazis: the Sharp's War on PBS, please plan to join Daniel Budd and Laurie Albright on Friday night, September 30 from 6:00-9:00 pm in Fellowship Hall. We will gather at 6:00 pm for a potluck meal, begin the 85 minute documentary viewing at 6:30pm. Discussion, using questions from a UUA guide and more, will begin immediately following at about 8:00pm.

This is a great intergenerational opportunity. Come and allow this experience to help you deepen and clarify your values, and how we might bring more compassion, justice, and love into this world.
