Next Congregational Conversation

Sunday, May 15, 12:30 P.M. - 2:00 P.M.
It's time to discuss the congregation's money!

At this meeting, we'll review our current financial position through the first 10 months of the current year, the results of the stewardship campaign, and the budget for the 2016-17 year that starts on July 1. There'll be lots of color graphs and plenty of time for comments and questions. The budget that you will see will be one that has been recommended by the Finance Committee, and will be presented to the Board for approval the Tuesday following this Congregational Conversation. The Board is very interested in receiving input from the entire congregation prior to approving the budget, so please make every effort to attend this session.

Lunch will be served, courtesy of the Board, and child care is available (but please call the church office and let us know if you need it).

Questions? Contact David Kantor, Past Board President, at 216/533-9652 or  [email protected].

Musical Happenings
May 1 through 22

There are so many exciting things happening with music this May! Here are a few highlights:
·         Come be a part of our Multigen Choir on Sunday, May 1st - adults, youth and children of all ages are welcome and no singing experience is necessary! There is no weeknight rehearsal commitment for this group, just come to the sanctuary at 10:00 that morning. Mike will teach the group an easy-to-learn version of "We Are..." and then we'll sing during the Coming of Age Service that same morning. All are welcome - see you there!
·         In honor of Mother's Day on Sunday, May 8th, we will have music from a brand new group - The First Church Men's Singers! Just as with the Multigen Choir, no experience is necessary - all you need to do is come to the sanctuary at 10:00 on the 8th. Mike will help the guys learn a couple of easy songs which we'll sing during the service. Men of all ages, come and sing as a Mother's Day treat for your mom or wife and for the whole congregation!
·         On Sunday, May 15th, we will have special music during the service from the award-winning instrumental group The North Coast Jazz Collective, featuring our very own Mark Grey. Don't miss it!
·         We'll have another great guest musician on Sunday, May 22nd as we will hear from Lucas Tai, a young violinist from St. Ignatius High School and the Cleveland Contemporary Youth Orchestra. Lucas will be performing on an historic 1665 Amati violin owned by The Cleveland Music School Settlement. Lucas's appearance is the premiere performance in a new partnership between First Church and The Music School Settlement, where we will be hearing from up and coming young settlement musicians on a regular basis during our Sunday services.

Hey UU: What's Cooking #3

Another Potluck!
These days I am often called upon to "bring a dish" to a work gathering or an evening get together.  I want something that is tasty but also easy to transport and serve. I often have no idea if there will be enough room in the refrigerator to keep it cool or stove space to heat something up.  Szechuan noodles have been one of my "go to" recipes for years. It can be served hot, warm and room temperature. It's not as good cold, but I've eaten that way also. You can make it with gluten free noodles and it can be served to vegans.  The noodles and spicy sauce can be mixed ahead of time for better flavor, but I often hold back on the added ingredients until I serve to preserve their separate flavor.

Debbie's Szechuan Noodles
1 Tbsp minced ginger(optional)
1 Tbsp minced garlic
4 tsp. sugar
3 Tbsp rice vinegar
6 Tbsp sesame oil
6 Tbsp soy sauce
½ tsp. ground black pepper
1 Tsp Chili Oil
1 lb box of dry noodles( vermicelli, spaghetti, rice noodles, gluten free noodles)
1. Mix all of the ingredient together, except pasta.
2. Cook 1 Lb. of vermicelli, al dente (or other noodle type of your choice)
3. Mix pasta and spicy liquid mix is a large bowl
4.  Serve hot, cold or room temperature
Optional: sprinkle with chives, chicken, shrimp, slivered vegetables, tofu , toasted almonds slivers or  anything that sounds good.
Serve as a side dish.

Congregational Read

If you are curious about faith development, want to know more, or have been wondering what it has to do with Unitarian Universalism....
If you were wondering just what Daniel meant in his sermon, "People of the Word," (Oct. 11, 2015) when he said,
"to look at these words as poetry, as symbolic language that has grown out of humanity's experience of reverence, as a language that suggests and does not dictate, as a language that thereby invites your own experience, as a language that draws you further into and deepens your own awareness and appreciation for the wonder and Mystery in which we live,"
...then you may wish to join in our first Congregational Read.

Everyone subscribing to Searchbox will get a copy of Jeanne Nieuwejaar's Fluent in Faith.  Those not subscribing can order the book separately for $10 cash or check made out to the First Unitarian Church of Cleveland, placed in an envelope, and given to Lifespan Faith Development Director, Bethany Ward (via mail, office mailbox, or in person).  Searchboxes and books will be distributed on May 1st and 8th, and the discussion will occur on Wednesday, May 25th, at 7 pm in Fellowship Hall.  Further questions?  Contact either Daniel or Bethany.
