From the Executive Director

Happy August! I hope all of you have had a chance to spend some time enjoying all that our great Gulf Coast has to offer this summer. Soon it will be back to school and back to the regular routine. We at the Women's Business Center unfortunately don't get the summers off. We have been working hard counseling, holding great trainings and planning more great things for you in the future. In July we held our annual Art As Business day long workshop where local artists learn about the business side of their art. You can see some pictures of the day on our Facebook page. On August 1 we will have our Quarterly Quorum luncheon with another great speaker to talk about "Networking and Gender Differences". On August 16 we will have a fun party at our Annual Women's Business Center Alliance Appreciation. We look forward to seeing all of you who are members along with any of you who want to find out more about becoming a part of our great support group. Our new Womenbiz Directory comes out in August as well. And watch your email for details of our annual Doing Business With Big Business training coming up in September. You can view these events and so much more on our online calendar. We look forward to seeing you at our next event.
Sincerely,

Kathryn Cariglino, Executive Director

It has been a busy time these last few weeks for all of us at the WBC. We are also making plans for our Alliance Appreciation Event, which will be on August 16, 2012, at the Magnolia Manor from 5:30 til 7:30. Greer's Market, our Presenting Sponsor, will provide the appetizers, desserts, wine and soft drinks and will feature Chef Lucy. Rob Holbert (of Lagniappe) and his band, Glass Joe, and sponsored by Hall-Namie Meats, will provide our entertainment. Our Decoration Sponsor is Navigator Credit Union, featuring the talents of Lora Michael as she will help transform this beautiful old home into a festive creation. I hope that all Alliance Members, as well as "future" alliance members will attend this fun event. Please mark your calendars and rsvp to me at adavis@womenbiz.biz or call me at the WBC office by Aug. 13th at 660-2725, ext. 16. Please help us to "Embrace Our Past and Celebrate Our Future".

Message from Sherman Blosser, Director of the Women's Business Center of Southern Alabama

Why do you need to register your business with the Central Contractor Registration (CCR)?
Small businesses are able to fulfill the majority of needs of the federal government. Whether they are small, no bid contracts or large bid contracts, only registered contractors are allowed to contract with the federal government. Registration allows the government to know which small businesses are available and willing to take government contracts. US Federal Contractor Registration deals with small business clients assisting them in building a proper profile to make it possible for government agencies to find and pay these businesses for their services. Central Contractor Registration is required in order for Government entities to pay businesses. Getting registered consists of getting your DUN's number, Cage Code, and proper Orca Filings.
Let the Women's Business Center of Southern Alabama be your technical assistance provider for writing your business plan and financial projections. Call us today and make an appointment to see one of our business consultants.
Sincerely,

Sherman Blosser, Director
Women's Business Center of Southern Alabama

Message from Sylvia Browder, Project Director of WBC Bizmobile Project -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the vast amount of social media networks for businesses to select from, how do you narrow it down to the ones that are perfect for your needs? Having thousands at your fingertips to sift through can become a daunting task!
To streamline the process, ask yourself the Who? What? Where? How?
1. Who are your customers?
2. What are their needs and desires?
3. Where do they live?
4. How much time do you commit to managing social media?
5. How do you search for a 'niche' network? 6. How do you monitor and protect
your online image?

News from SBA
SBA Launches Program to Help Transitioning Service Members and Veterans Become Entrepreneurs Operation Boots to Business: From Service to Startup to Help Them Start Businesses and Create Jobs WASHINGTON - The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has joined with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) to launch a training program for transitioning service members and veterans to help them become entrepreneurs and create jobs. Operation Boots to Business: From Service to Startup is a national initiative that will be piloted with the U.S. Marine Corps. The announcement was made today by U.S. Small Business Administrator Karen Mills and U.S. Marine Corps representatives at Quantico, VA. Read more...___________________________________________________________________ The Department of State has recently launched two important initiatives in support of our Economic Statecraft agenda, the Direct Line program and the BusinessTab. Economic Statecraft focuses on elevating the role of economics and commercial work in accomplishing our foreign policy agenda and these initiatives are aimed at supporting American business and job creation in the US. The BusinessTab is another key feature to improve the American business community's access to relevant information on U.S. Embassy websites. There is now a standard business navigation tab on all embassy sites that makes it easy to access business resources for export and investment. The Direct Line program provides a unique opportunity for American businesses, particularly small- and medium-sized enterprises, to engage directly via teleconference with U.S. Ambassadors overseas. The program is open to American companies, which are already in the country where the Ambassador serves or which are interested in expanding their businesses into those countries. There is a calendar of calls at http://www.state.gov/e/eb/directline/ and we encourage businesses to sign up for alerts. Over 500 participants have joined calls to date across 18 different markets including China, Indonesia, and Turkey. The SBA Resource Partners' unparalleled ability to reach out to domestic markets will broaden our domestic outreach efforts for DirectLine and BusinessTab to SME's. We are asking for your help to reach out to more U.S. businesses to inform them that both DirectLine and Business Tab are available as tools for the American business community.
