HometownChristmas in Lancaster

It's time to Light of the Square!

This year, our Square will be decorated in the Williamsburg theme of the late 1700s. Since Lancaster
was founded in 1797, we felt it appropriate to decorate in that time period to celebrate our origins and focus on what Hometown Holidays mean to all of us.
Although the focus seems to be in Lancaster, we encourage everyone in the County to join as we celebrate this time of year.
The official "Lighting of the Tree" will be December 3rd at 6:30pm at the Garrard County Courthouse.

4:00pm to 6:00pm - Reception at EKU Higher Education Center. There will be crafts for the
kids and an opportunity to send cards to our veterans and active military.

6:00pm - Join us for Carols on the Courthouse steps and countdown to lighting of the tree.
6:30pm - Official Lighting of the Christmas Tree and Santa Arrives! Children will have
the opportunity to visit with Santa in the courthouse.

Thank You

Many will agree that the Square looks beautiful and festive for the holidays. Although it would be nice to have secret elves surprise us with this beauty, we do not. Many, many hours of hard work went into planning, designing and putting together the updated decor of the Square.

The committee members and volunteers that did such a great job are:
Mary Adrianne Davis, Jean Turner, Joe & Connie Brown, Elizabeth Geers, Greg Ives, Hallie Lamb, Shirley Long, Marvin Marshbanks, Brandon McGlone, Maggie Mick, Betty Montgomery, Babette Overman, Jay Overman, Pam Ruda, Mayor Don Rinthen and the City of Lancaster, Richard Sebastian and the Fire Department volunteers.

The beautiful decorations could not be possible without donations of supplies and money. Our thanks to EKU Higher Education Center, First Southern Bank, Lancaster Women's Club, Napier Brother Clothing, Lancaster Florist, Family Crafts & Flowers, and DART Sanitation.

United Way

In 2010, Heart of KY United Way volunteers launched Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VTIA) sites in Boyle, Garrard, Lincon and Mercer counties. This first-year effort accomplished free returns and thousands of dollars in federal and state refund monies to 196 area residents. Seasoned VITA programs recognized this as a great accomplishment.

We are making plans now for 2011. Experts say we could easily double the number of returns we complete if we have the capacity.

Please consider being a volunteer tax preparer! Last year we had 9 volunteer preparers. Our goal this year is to have 20.

  • You don't have to have a tax or bookkeeping background! (If I can do this, anyone can!)
  • You choose when, where and how often you volunteer. (Sites are located in 4 counties.)
  • You will have a meaningful one-on-one volunteer experience.
  • You will receive 8 hours of IRS training and become certified as a VITA volunteer.

Please feel free to call me if you want to know more about what to expect as a volunteer tax preparer or have any questions. And please forward this to anyone you know who may be interested in volunteering.

Thank you!
