Hometown
Christmas in Lancaster

The
weather was chilly but many came out on Friday, December 3rd to
officially usher in the holidays in Lancaster. Kids and adults
alike were treated to goodies at EKU Higher Education Center and
took time out to make ornaments and write Christmas cards for our
active military, veterans and service member families.
Christa Osborne took the microphone on the courthouse steps and
led the happy group of kids in carols. With the assistance of Mayor
Don Rinthen, the kids counted down to official lighting of our
tree. Santa arrived in style, thanks to the Lancaster Fire
Department. With horns, sirens and lights ablazin', Santa arrived
on the Square and welcomed the children to chat with him about
their wish lists. Santa stayed to all kid were seen!
Thanks to the Hometown Christmas committee, businesses on the
square, the Lancaster Fire Department, the City of Lancaster, and
Garrard County Fiscal Court for their dedication to this annual
event.

New
Small Business Invesment Program
Governor
Beshear Announces Launch of Kentucky Small Business Investment
Credit Program New tax credit program encourages job creation and
capital investment by Kentucky small businesses with 50 or fewer
employees
LEXINGTON,
Ky. (Dec. 6, 2010) - Gov. Steve Beshear today announced the
Kentucky Small Business Investment Credit (KSBIC) program, part of
the Governor's Incentives for a New Kentucky (INK) legislation,
will start accepting applications in January 2011. The KSBIC
program is designed to spur job creation by providing a
nonrefundable state income tax credit to small businesses.
The
program provides state income tax credits ranging from $3,500 to
$25,000 per eligible small business that creates, fills and
maintains one or more new, eligible jobs and invests at least
$5,000 in qualifying equipment or technology. With certain
exceptions, most for-profit small businesses with 50 or fewer
employees are considered eligible for the program.

In 2010, Heart
of KY United Way volunteers launched Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (VTIA) sites in Boyle, Garrard, Lincon and Mercer
counties. This first-year effort accomplished free returns and
thousands of dollars in federal and state refund monies to 196 area
residents. Seasoned VITA programs
recognized this as a great accomplishment.
We are making
plans now for 2011. Experts say we could easily double the number
of returns we complete if we have the
capacity.
Please consider being a
volunteer tax preparer! Last year we had 9 volunteer
preparers. Our goal this year is to have 20.
- You
don't have to have a tax or bookkeeping background! (If I can do
this, anyone can!)
- You
choose when, where and how often you volunteer. (Sites are located
in 4 counties.)
- You
will have a meaningful one-on-one volunteer experience.
- You
will receive 8 hours of IRS training and become certified as a VITA
volunteer.
Please feel free
to call me if you want to know more about what to expect as a
volunteer tax preparer or have any questions. And please forward
this to anyone you know who may be interested in
volunteering.
Thank
you!
