"Growing a Rule of Life" Lenten Series Beings This Sunday
On Sundays in Lent starting this Sunday, February 14, after the 10 a.m. service, and on Wednesdays in Lent starting on February 17 at 7 p.m., St. Gregory's will offer a six-session Lenten series entitled "Growing a Rule of Life." This series was developed by the Brothers of St. John, an Episcopal monastic order based in Cambridge, MA and Virginia Theological Seminary's  Center for the Ministry of Teaching. In the monastic tradition, the word rule implies a regularizing, bringing order and intentionality to our lives, especially our relationship with God. This rule provides life-giving support for our faith life.

Here's how to participate: come to either the Sunday or Wednesday class led by our clergy team. Go to  www.SSJE.org/growrule and sign up for the daily email and to view daily videos that share brief reflections and offer encouragement in developing a rule of life. We hope you will join us on this Lenten journey of spiritual renewal!

Women's Lenten Retreat a Success
The 2016 Women's Lenten Retreat took place at St. Gregory's on Friday, February 5 (evening) and on Saturday, February 6 (morning). Our theme, "Embracing Scripture: God's Word Comes Alive!", guided our time together and was inspired by the our recent emphasis on furthering spiritual growth through deepened engagement with Scripture. Over twenty women gathered to study Scripture, engage in small group discussion, and enjoy wonderful fellowship and worship time.

Our Scripture study focused on four Bible passages taken from various Lenten services - one Old Testament reading, one Psalm, one New Testament reading (epistle), and one Gospel reading. Three different translations of each lesson were provided as well as questions for reflection/discussion in small groups. In addition, four attendees offered brief testimonies about what Holy Scripture meant to them and the Rev. Elizabeth Pankey Warren offered a wonderful guided meditation on Friday evening. Friday evening ended with Compline by candlelight and the retreat concluded on Saturday with a Eucharist service led by Fr. Andrew.

Because we found our time together so meaningful and uplifting, we now offer the retreat schedule, Scripture readings, and discussion questions online for anyone to use and enjoy.  Click here to access the schedule, readings, and discussion questions.

Presiding Bishop Calls for More Inclusive Society
Presiding Bishop Michael Curry addresses members and guests of the National Press Club on Feb. 8 in Washington, D.C., on the church's role in creating a more inclusive society. Photo: Lynette Wilson/Episcopal News Service
From the Episcopal News Services

"We shall either learn to live together...or perish together as fools," Presiding Bishop Michael Curry began a February 8 address to members and guests of the National Press Club.

The words, spoken by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during a 1964 speech in St. Louis, Missouri, serve as a defining quote for the 21st century, said Curry.

"The choice is ours, 'chaos or community,'" said Curry, the latter words echoing King's fourth and final book,  "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community," published in 1967. In the book, said Curry, it was evident that King was struggling with the future of the civil rights movement and how to lead a nation - potentially set on tearing itself apart - during a time of racial- and class-strife, and the Vietnam War.

Building on the theme, "the church's role in creating a more inclusive society," Curry shared his remarks with more than 30 people gathered in the Edward R. Murrow Room of the club's headquarters.
