Recent Courses
Last month, our students explored farms all over NYC during our Crop Management course led by Chris Bolden Newsome and Lise Lorimer.
After studying crop families, students learned about common practices regarding succession planting, interplanting, crop rotation, and harvesting. In addition to cultivated plants, students practiced identifying weeds, and shared traditional uses for wild, uncultivated plants.

Our Season Extension course highlights the best crops for late-season production. We'll learn about common season-extension tools: row covers, sun boxes, cold frames, greenhouses and hoop houses-- including the benefits and challenges of using these materials and where to source them. On August 19, we will visit Rise & Root Farm about 1.5 hours outside of NYC, and provide bus transportation, which is included in the course cost. Ready to keep growing? In September, our Preparing for Winter course will cover seed saving, garlic planting, garden clean-up and tool storage, cover-cropping basics (varieties, sowing methods and planting calendar) as well as food preservation techniques.

Zooming Out: National Food Politics
|
|
|
In 2015, New York City joined 100 cities from around the world to define and implement the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP). Two years later, the number of cities has grown to 142, and New York continues to champion food policy initiatives that align with the pact. To find out what the city is doing, read more here.
The Black Urban Growers (BUGs) Conference has an open Call for Proposals through August 19! This year's conference will take place in Atlanta, GA from November 10-12. Be sure to submit your ideas and stay up to date on the conference line up.
