What's Life?

Jack Kerouac, American author, said, "Life is a foreign country."

And Milan Kundera, Czech author, said, "We live everything as it comes, without warning, like an actor going on cold."

We step onto the stage every day without a script. I remember the last time I honestly thought I had it made. My life fell apart shortly thereafter. As most of us are forced to learn, life can be altered by a single event we didn't see coming. Who knows what the next instant will bring?

Some people muddle through life assuming it came with rewind. It doesn't. Whatever has been done is already done and can't be altered. It's like striking a bell. Once the bell is struck the ringing continues and can't be taken back.

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Swiss-born American psychiatrist, said, "It's only when we truly know and fully understand we have a limited time on earth - and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up, we will then begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it was the only one we had."

Living each day as if it might be our last is powerful, especially if we are wise enough to remember what an old Quaker once said, "I expect to pass through life but once. If there is any kindness, or any good thing I can do to my fellow beings, let me do it now. I shall pass this way but once."
