Great Friends Make Great Libraries

The Chandler Public Library gets by with a little help from our Friends . . .  actually, we get by with A LOT of help from our Friends!  Every year, the Friends of the Chandler Public Library give over $25,000 to fund summer reading for all ages, adult literacy programs, early literacy efforts, cultural programming and help support staff and volunteer training.  In addition, the Friends have rallied countless times to advocate for our library and the importance of library services.

October 15-21, 2017 is the 12th annual National Friends of Libraries Week, and it's the perfect opportunity to give our Friends a big shout out for all they do to make a difference for us every single day.  Celebration activities include special children's programs through the week based on the theme of friendship and awareness of Friends' sponsored programs and how to become a Friend.

"Our Friends make our great library even better," said library manager Dan Lee.  "The funds they raise through membership and used book sales allow us to enhance our programming that we couldn't otherwise provide the public.  I think most customers would be surprised to learn how many of the services and programs they enjoy are supported by the Friends."

It's easy to support the Friends:  attend a program sponsored by the Friends of the Library; shop the Friends used book sales (both online and in library); shop online at AmazonSmile, volunteer your time; become a paid member for $25! For more information on the Friends of the Chandler Public, view our web page.

Great Friends make great libraries...and great libraries make strong communities.

Thank you for your support the Friends of Chandler Public Library!

Registration is open now!
In an ever-evolving world, technology continues to drive much of our daily lives. Yet, many people crave connection with others more than ever before. Personal connection is sought in many different ways and forms in order to create a sense of belonging, purpose and satisfaction. Connect!, a TEDxChandlerPublicLibrary event on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, will feature local speakers who are making connections through research, objects, laughter and presence. What they see in the world may just change your perspective too.

Connect! will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Oct. 14, at the Chandler Downtown Library, 22 S. Delaware St. It is open to the public and free, however pre-registration is required at TEDxChandlerPublicLibrary.com, starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 30. In order to meet TEDx rules, this event is limited to 100 attendees, so individuals wanting to attend are encouraged to register as soon as they can. Previous TEDx events at the Chandler Library filled within 48 hours.

Auditions were held in August and six speakers with diverse professional backgrounds were chosen. The six speakers and their topics are:
* Lydia Chew - Connecting the STEM to the root
* Jody Crago - Objects of my obsession: How everyday objects connect us to people and the world around us
* Dave Engelthaler, Ph.D. - Connect the first world to the third world
* Candace Lewis, Ph.D - A therapeutic trip: From experience to epigenome
* Ricky Olson - Leverage laughter to create connection
* Jen Rooney - Connect four C's and come alive!

Tisha Marie Pelletier, an East Valley entrepreneur who mentors future entrepreneurs, will emcee the event. Pelletier is a graduate of the Walter Cronkite School of Communications at Arizona State University, with an emphasis in business and marketing.

For updates, additional information and registration go to TEDxChandlerPublicLibrary.com.
Staff Recs
This month on cloudLibrary, we're featuring the literary favorites of Aubrey, a librarian at our Basha Library location. In addition to her picks, here are a few things about her we thought we'd share with you.

How long have you worked for CPL? In which position(s)? I began with Chandler Public Library as a Page for 3 years then became a Library Aide for 6 years. After completing my Masters in Library Science degree, I began working as a Librarian for another system and returned to Chandler Public Library a little over a year ago, so all in all, I've been with CPL for about 10 years!

Which author(s) did you dislike at first but grew into? Believe it or not, this has never happened to me! Typically, if I can't get into a book after the first few chapters or I don't find myself wanting to continue, I will just stop and find something else.

How long on average does it take you to read a book? It can actually take a couple of weeks! I try to fit in some reading everyday but because I can't always do that, I download audio books with Cloud Library! I drive a lot and it makes the commute more enjoyable. I also like having a physical book that I am reading at home and at work and then an audio book that I can listen to when getting ready for work or traveling.

What advice would you give to someone looking for a book but not sure where to start? I know that when I am looking for my next book, I might use Novelist (through the CPL website), Goodreads, or Libraryreads. With tools like Novelist or Goodreads, I will search for authors or titles I have enjoyed in the past and then get recommendations. You can also search through various genres. Libraryreads is a website that highlights books that librarians across the country love. CPL will also add those titles onto a featured booklist on our website. Another great resource? Visit a Chandler Library and ask any of the helpful staff at the Information Desk.

For more reading recommendations or assistance with downloading e-books from our cloudLibrary, please visit one of our four library locations or call 480-782-2800.
