What's New @ Your
Chandler Public Library

March 2017
Just a reminder, the Hamilton and Basha libraries will open at 9:00 a.m.
Monday through Friday, March 13 - 27, 2017 during Spring break.
For hours and location of all four of our libraries, please check our website.
Spring Break Activities & Reading Program
The Chandler Public Library and In-N-Out Burger will once again provide area children with fun reading incentives during the upcoming Spring Break. Between March 4 and April 15, 2017, children ages 4-12 who read five books at his or her reading level can earn a "Cover to Cover Club" reading certificate, along with a coupon for a free hamburger or cheeseburger from In-N-Out.

Families can enroll their children in the program and pick up a reading log from any of the four Chandler Public Library locations. The log is used to list the titles of the books read. After five books are completed, a parent or guardian signs the reading log, returns it to the library, and the child receives their certificate and coupon. If a child between the eligible ages is unable to read themselves, they can still participate if a parent reads the book to them. Each child may earn up to three certificates during the program, while supplies last.

In addition to the reading program, each library location will be offering a variety of programs and activities for kids, teens, and families. In addition to on-going activities, special programming during Spring break will include movies, crafts such as making duct tape wallets, games, and more.

For more information, please call 480-782-2800, visit the library website at chandlerlibrary.org, or drop by one of the four library locations.

Name: Maggie Downs

Which Library or work area do you volunteer in?  I work at the Chandler Hamilton Library.

What type of things do you do for CPL?  I process the reserved items for patrons. The books are place on a cart(s).   I place each item in boxes and put the materials out on the shelves designated for reserved items only.

How long have you volunteered for CPL?  I have volunteered at the Hamilton Branch for three (3) years.

What inspired you to volunteer at CPL?  My mom volunteered at her local Library at the Waterloo Public Library donated by Andrew Carnegie.  My mother, Marion Margaret, dedicated many years of service to her local library.  I started about six (6) months after she died.  I decided to volunteer at the library as a way of honoring her.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at CPL?  I like the people, the staff and the patrons who visit the library.

What is your favorite thing about CPL?  The Hamilton Branch is close to my home, it is a convenient location for me to volunteer.
What would you share about CPL with someone new to the area?  The Library is friendly and easy to use.

What did you do before you started volunteering?  I am a retired social worker.  I have a part-time job as an administrative assistant at a church in Sun Lakes.

What are your interests and hobbies?  I enjoy reading and spending time with my family and my dogs.

Tell us something that will surprise s about you.  I grew up on a farm outside of Waterloo, Iowa.  We had a Bookmobile that stopped a mile away from our house and we would get off the school bus, go in the Bookmobile and check out tons of books, and walk home.  On the way home, I wondered, "Why did I check out so many books"?  The books were very heavy!
Waterloo is divided by a river and when Andrew Carnegie wanted to build a library for the town, there was a lot of fuss about which side of the river should get the library. In the end, Mr. Carnegie donated two (2) libraries to the city. My very first paid job was at the Carnegie Library in Waterloo, Iowa.  I knew all the best sellers and new books.  I read them all!
What book(s) are you reading now?  I have been reading the "Women's Murder Club" series by James Patterson. I am also reading a book written by Pastor Moe Redding (my pastor).  The title is "Pure Power".
Don't Miss This!

Test Prep Resources?
Studying for exams like the SAT or GED**, or career-based tests like the NCLEX or Postal Service exam? You can get free practice tests and study materials from Testing & Education Reference Center (TERC). Most exams have multiple practice tests with the same number of questions and time limits (if applicable) as a real test. You can save your answers and even stop in the middle and resume the test later if you need to. Get even more practice tests with Learning Express, as well as practice at math skills for adults and multiple school subjects for kids grade 4 and up.

**The new Arizona GED now includes a Civics test. Study for the Civics test with the same material used for the U.S. Citizenship exam, featured in both TERC and Learning Express.

To access TERC or Learning Express, go to chandlerlibrary.org and hover your mouse over the purple Research & Learning tab. Then click A-Z List of Resources, and scroll down to choose TERC or Learning Express. You'll need your library card and PIN if you're signing in from home. A new exhibit is on view at Chandler Museum this spring, titled "Un-American: Japanese Internment in Our Backyard." This exhibit tells the history of Gila River Internment Camp, located just south of Chandler, where 16,655 Japanese American men, women, and children were incarcerated during World War II. As part of this exhibit, Chandler Museum is leading a community effort to make 16,655 origami paper cranes, one for each individual. The cranes, along with all of the names of those who were incarcerated, are on view as part of the exhibit. To contribute to this project, drop off paper cranes at the Chandler Museum, 300 S. Chandler Village Drive, Chandler. For more information visit the chandlermuseum.org or contact Tiffani Egnor at [email protected] or 480.782.2874.
