Wanted: Teen Volunteers
Do you know a teen looking for a way to keep cool this summer? Encourage them to volunteer at one of our four library locations!

Teen volunteers are essential to the Summer Reading Program at Chandler Public Library.  With the help of our summer volunteers, the library was able to reach almost 7,000 people last year!  This is the perfect opportunity to gain volunteer service hours while helping your community during the hot Arizona summer. Reading program volunteer tasks include program registration, logging points, distributing prizes, answering questions and more.  If you would like a more hands-on volunteering experience, consider assisting with the many programs provided throughout the summer.

We Appreciate Our Volunteers
Last month the Chandler Public Library celebrated the nearly 200 weekly adult volunteers that make our great library even better. Volunteers assist with collection maintenance and circulation activities, and facilitate the Library's Learning Lab and Job Center programs. The Library's Adult Literacy program's small group tutoring is completely facilitated by volunteers;as is Read to Succeed, our first grade reading program, are all volunteers. Volunteers bring library materials to homebound residents with our Book Buddy program, as well as sort, categorize, research and sell books on behalf of the Friends of the Library. Volunteers visit the childbirth preparation classes at three sites every month to present the Books for Babies program to expectant parents and also teach computer classes, assist with clerical activities and special projects and events as well. It was an honor to be able to thank them for their service.

Several volunteers were presented with service milestone pins at the April volunteer appreciation luncheon:

A special bookplate has been placed in the following titles to acknowledge each of the Library's volunteers and the time, energy and skills they share with us. Click here to see the books selected by each volunteer.

Staff Picks
This month on cloudLibrary, we're featuring staff member Michelle's favorite books (which she can access on her mobile device). In addition to her picks, here are three facts about Michelle we thought we'd share with you.

1. I've worked for Chandler Public Library since 2000, starting at the Downtown library, ending up at Sunset, and popping in at the other locations along the way.

2. I read a little of everything - general fiction, science fiction and fantasy, mysteries, historical fiction, biography, essays, poetry, nonfiction in all sorts of subjects. What usually hits me as a "favorite" is anything with a compelling voice and gorgeous writing.

3. I'd love to have dinner with Ursula K. LeGuin, the legendary writer of fantasy and science fiction, as well as an expert in anthropology and an outspoken social critic. I've seen her speak a number of times and she was fascinating. I have no idea what we'd eat; I'd let her choose.

If you are looking for suggestions for your next great read, please ask Michelle, or any of our other staff for their personal recommnedations!

A Century of Song
Ella Fitzgerald's centennial birthday was on April 25th, and although she's long gone, thankfully her music still lives. Gifted with an amazing voice - crystal clear clarity, pitch perfect intonation, and among the most versatile in jazz, Miss Ella's career was legendary, with numerous awards (13 Grammys, loads of lifetime achievements, a Presidential Medal of Freedom), hundreds of classic songs, and a wealth of amazing collaborations with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Chick Webb, and Frank Sinatra.

Celebrate Ella's legacy with Freegal, where you can find tons of great songs and albums, all free to download with your library card. Enjoy!
