Volunteer Spotlight
Each month we spotlight one of our awesome volunteers and the area in which they give their time.

If you would like to volunteer your time to our library, please visit our  volunteer webpage or attend an  orientation meeting.

Name:  Monica Martorano

Which Library/workarea do you volunteer in:  In the online bookstore and the Read to Succeed program.

What types of things do you do for CPL:  I sort through discarded library books and book donations from library patrons to assess their possible value online and then forward them to our research team.

How long have you volunteered for CPL:  Almost 2 years.

What inspired you to volunteer at CPL:  Now that I'm retired, I wanted to give back to my favorite place in the world, the library!

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at CPL:  The people!  Staff, volunteers and the kids and their families.

What is your favorite thing about CPL:  The camaraderie and "can do" attitude of everyone!

What would you share about CPL with someone new to the area:  The library has something for everyone and is a vital part of our community.

What did you do before you started volunteering for CPL:  I was an Air Traffic Controller at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.

What are your interests/hobbies:  I'm a proud, doting Aunt first and foremost!  I love to travel and learn all about the places I've been and the places I've yet to see.  I've also recently started taking some art history classes that quench my thirst for the arts!  And, of course, reading!

Tell us something that will surprise us about you:  Quite often I'll be reading 2 or 3 books at the same time, like watching different channels on TV.

What book(s) are you reading now:   The Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear.

Resources for
Your Research
Your Chandler Public Library subscribes to a wealth of information in our online resources, material you won't find for free in an ordinary web search, but all free to you with your library card! You might already know about some of our most popular resources - Consumer Reports for product ratings, Lynda for video courses on a variety of computer/technology and creative subjects, and ReferenceUSA for business research - but we have so many more! Here are some of our "Hidden Gems" - less used databases that have information for you.

Job Searchers: Career Transitions offers resume and cover letter tips, an interview simulator, and a career assessment quiz.
Test Takers and other students: Learning Express. Studying for the GED, SAT, ASVAB, HESI, or other academic or career exams? You can find study guides and practice tests here. There's also practice for math, social studies and other subjects for elementary, middle and high school students; math, writing and computer skills for adults; study for the Citizenship Test and more.
Language Learners: PowerSpeak and Rocket Languages. Why choose these over the more popular Mango Languages? PowerSpeak gets you started learning any of eight languages (plus two ESL courses) the fastest: just log in with your library card number and PIN, then click a language and go! Rocket Languages offers American Sign Language along with ten other choices.

Visit our A - Z Resources page to see all the online resources we offer, all free with your library card. Almost all are available from home, 24/7. (In-library use only resources are noted.) Have a question about which resource is right for you? Visit your local library or ask us online!

CPL Reads

Our online Facebook group, " CPL Reads" has discussed two books already!

This month we will be discussing Murder On The Orient Express by Agatha Christie. We will also be comparing it to the recently released movie.

Join us in January for our discussion of "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up" as we share our thoughts, experiences, and maybe even some tips on starting the new year off on the right foot!
Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if people properly simplify and organize their home once, they'll never have to do it again.

To join the group, logon to Facebook, search for " CPL Reads" and request to join.Happy reading!
