Congratulations to our new library manager
Congratulations to Dan Lee, the new manager of the Chandler Public Library. The  press release  from the City of Chandler is below. As you can see, Dan was our Information Technology leader for many years, and he was instrumental in bringing ebooks to the library - check out  Dan's favorite ebook reads  in our Cloud Library ebook collection.

The City of Chandler has named Dan Lee as the new manager of the Chandler Public Library. For the past 15 years, Lee had been serving as the Assistant Library Manager. His promotion was announced last week by Chandler Community Services Director Brenda Brown, the previous Library Manager.

"Dan has served the City and the Library for 27 years, with his responsibilities steadily progressing as his value to our organization has grown," Brown said. "He is known throughout the City for his natural curiosity, innovative approach to problem solving and great customer service. He is ethical, open and approachable."
When he started working for the Chandler Library in 1990, Dan Lee was the only employee overseeing the Information Technology needs of the staff and Library customers. There was only one Chandler Library, the computers used floppy discs, and most people had never heard of the Internet. Since then, Lee has been involved in the design and construction of all four Chandler libraries, as well as every aspect of Library technology infrastructure. He has been a member of the Library Leadership team for the past 15 years, and has established himself as a trusted voice on technical projects throughout the City.
"I am excited and deeply honored to take on the role of Library Manager with the City of Chandler. I have had an active role in managing the Chandler Library operations for more than 25 years, so I know firsthand what an outstanding organization it is. I believe the Library's excellence is a reflection of the City of Chandler's commitment to providing residents high quality of life through innovation, diversity, and superior customer service. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to continue that tradition of excellence."

"I am confident that Dan possesses the leadership qualities and vision that the Library needs to continue to provide quality services and programs for library visitors, both in person and online," Brown said. "His knowledge about library operations, attention to emerging technologies, and positive relationship with staff are additional reasons that I am very excited about the future of Chandler Public Library!"
Author Visit
Local author Sheila Grinell will be at the Chandler Hamilton Library on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. to read from her book, "Appetite." In her book, parents are upset when their daughter, who has been traveling abroad, brings home a young man and announces they are getting married. Can the parents convince their daughter that she is making a terrible mistake?

Sheila Grinell has lived in the Phoenix area since 1993 when she moved here to assist with the opening of the Arizona Science Center. After spending time with a sick parent, she began to write and led to her foray into fiction.

Registration is required for this program. For more information, click here or call the Chandler Public Library at 480-782-2800.

The Chandler Hamilton Library is located at 3700 South Arizona Avenue.

Frank Talk: War, Liberty & Law: The U.S. Constitution and Crisis

declaration-independence.jpg There is a fundamental tension between national security and individual liberty. The Bill of Rights guarantees certain liberties, free speech and press, peaceable assembly, the right to bear arms and be free from unlawful searches and seizures, among them. But during times of war, and even times of peace, the government's war-making power may trample on individual rights in order to protect the nation. How do we strike a balance between liberty and security? Does the end justify the means, or can the government's tactics violate privacy and freedom? Join us for a FRANK Talk about national security and liberty.

Volunteer Spotlight
Each month we spotlight one of our awesome volunteers and the area in which they give their time.
If you would like to volunteer your time to our library, please visit our volunteer webpage or attend an orientation meeting.

Name: Mary Siegfried Dozbaba

Which Library/workarea do you volunteer in: I volunteer at the Downtown library in the Adult Education Center.

What types of things do you do for CPL: I co-teach the Citizenship Workshop with my sister, Nancy Siegfried. The classes prepare those applying to become U.S. citizens to take the history/civics quiz. I also substitute when needed for Talk Time classes.

How long have you volunteered for CPL: It will be nine years this September.

What inspired you to volunteer at CPL: I was impressed by the adult education programs at the library, and hoped that my "inner-teacher," and my love of language and history could help out in some way.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at CPL: I thoroughly enjoy the students who attend the Citizenship Workshop and Talk Time classes. I learn so much from them, and I'm moved by their dedication and resilience. They are from countries around the world, and are so eager to become citizens and to be part of their new country and community.

What is your favorite thing about CPL: I love that the library is such a welcoming place in our community. It is focused on touching the lives of everyone, from toddlers to teens to families to immigrants.

What would you share about CPL with someone new to the area: That the library is truly the heart of our community - and through its youth programs, book clubs, education and technology programs, it's a perfect place to meet neighbors, learn and assimilate into the community. Also, the staff is always helpful and welcoming.

What do you do before you started volunteering: My background is in journalism. I worked years ago at the Scottsdale Progress newspaper and then worked in TV, PR and for a business magazine. I currently do freelance writing and editing.

What are your interests/hobbies: Reading, cooking, traveling, scrapbooking and spending time with friends and family, especially my 2-year-old granddaughter.

Tell us something that will surprise us about you: When I started teaching the Citizenship Workshop, I was amazed at how many questions in the Citizenship Quiz I didn't know. Now I know how many amendments there are to the U.S. Constitution. Do you?

What book(s) are you reading now: Mary Coin; It Ends With Us, and Dark Money.

Thank you, Mary!!

American Heart Month
February is American Heart Month. The Chandler Public Library is doing its part, with the American Heart Association, to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease - which is the leading cause of death for men and women in America - and the importance of heart health.
How can the library help? You can find a wealth of medical information in Health and Wellness Resource Center, a resource database collected from medical journals, encyclopedias, and other health-related publications. Check out health & fitness magazines from our Zinio magazine database. (Check out as many issues as you want and keep them as long as you like - there are no due dates!) All these resources are free to you with your library card and PIN numbers.
You can also browse for books in the library. Check the nonfiction shelf in the 610s for our health books, with books on heart disease at 616.12. We've also put together a list of fiction and non-fiction books for you with "Heart" in the titles!
