Staff Picks
This month on  cloudLibrary , we're featuring staff member  Lindsey's favorite books  . In addition to her picks, here are three facts about her we thought we'd share with you.

How long have your worked in a library? CPL? I have been a librarian for 6 years and at CPL for 1.5 years.

What is your favorite genre? I have a passion for youth books.  I especially enjoy reading the newest picture books to my daughter.

Which book did you read as a kid/teen that made the most impact on you?  The BFG by Roald Dahl - My fourth grade teacher read it aloud to our class and I have distinct memories of getting carried away into the world of giants.

If you are looking for suggestions for your next great read, please ask Lindsey, or any of our other staff for their personal recommendations!
Volunteer Spotlight
Each month we spotlight one of our awesome volunteers and the area in which they give their time.
If you would like to volunteer your time to our library, our next orientation session
will be held on Friday, August 4, 3:00 - 4:30 PM at the Downtown Library in the Cactus Room.

Name: Anne Robison

Which Library/work area do you volunteer in:   At the Downtown Library and in the community.

What types of things do you do for CPL:   I do a variety of things.  I enjoy researching books for the online bookstore; that is great fun!  I speak to childbirth education classes about the value of reading to babies and children.  I assist with administrative tasks and I have a homebound book buddy who is very enjoyable.

How long have you volunteered for CPL:   Over a year.

What inspired you to volunteer at CPL:   Genuine love of books and a lifelong love of libraries.  I have always loved reading and books have been friends to me.  I love the chase - new authors, new books.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at CPL:   Working with books is similar to discovering "old" friends and the excitement of making new ones.  Also, I enjoy working with other volunteers.  It is very fulfilling.
I am proud and to be a member of the Friends of Chandler Library.  It is such a simple and easy way to support the library and the benefits are multiple.

What is your favorite thing about CPL:   I am impressed with the wide variety of programs, services and professionalism/helpfulness of staff.

What would you share about CPL with someone new to the area:   It is such a pleasant, rich environment.  Look at the website - you can't imagine all that has changed in libraries; it isn't the library of your childhood.  It isn't dusty old books, but rather a live organization.

What did you do before you started volunteering for CPL:  I was a development officer at California State University Northridge and responsible for fundraising, alumni relations and special events.

What are your interests/hobbies:   Travel, reading, gardening and pottery.

Tell us something that will surprise us about you:   I keep score at baseball games.

What book(s) are you reading now:   A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.   It is a gratifying read.  For every book we buy, my husband and I donate a book.
A Note from our Friends
Did you know babies start to learn language and sounds as soon as they are born?  Reading to your baby will help them learn more quickly and also increase the loving bond between you.

Make reading a special part of your baby's life.  Set aside a special time of each day to read.  Five minutes is enough at first, you may increase the time as your baby gets older.  Look for chances to read during a busy day.  Pack a baby book in your diaper bag when you go for an appointment.  The wait time at the doctor's office is a perfect opportunity for 'read time'!

Books for Babies is one of Chandler Public Library's outreach programs, funded in part by the Friends of Chandler Public Library, targeting expectant parents attending childbirth preparation classes at Rome Towers, Mercy Gilbert, and Chandler Regional Hospital every month.  Every parent receives packets with educational pamphlets, reading tips, a board book, and other items that provide families with ideas to develop a fun-filled reading routine.  A trained volunteer then provides information about how Chandler Public Library can support these efforts.

The Friends encourage you and your family to visit the Chandler Public Library for more tips, book lists and a schedule of events at each of our four libraries.  You will find events such as storytimes, play groups, and workshops listed, as well as online resources such as the Tumblebook Library, an online animated picture book collection.

If you would like to learn more about supporting programs like these and becoming a Friend of the Chandler Public Library, please visit our webpage .

The Friends would also like to invite community members to attend their Annual Meeting on Tuesday, June 27 at 6:00pm at the Chandler Downtown Library, Cotton Room - South. See you there!
