Chandler Public Library

Library Card Signup Month
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Library Card Sign-up Month, a national observance that was launched in 1987 to ensure every child obtain a library card and use it. Since then, thousands of public and school libraries join each fall in a national effort to ensure every child does just that.

Society is changing in the way it consumes information. Libraries are evolving with these changes to serve the public and to continue to fulfill their role in leveling the playing field for all who seek information and access to technologies.

Today's public libraries are thriving technology hubs that millions rely on as their first or only choice for Internet access and digital content. Ninety percent of libraries offer access to e-books, an increase of 14 percent from 2012. Mobile devices, including e-book readers, which are available at 39 percent of libraries.

Often the library is the first point of contact in helping community members. From providing assistance to small business owners to assisting with access to e-government resources, libraries are changing lives through education.

Libraries are America's great information equalizers - the only place people of all ages and backgrounds can find and freely use such a diversity of resources, along with the expert guidance of librarians.

We appreciate your continued support of our Library by using your library card to check out materials and access online resources. Let your family and friends know about all that YOUR Chandler Public Library has to offer!

Staff Recs

This month on cloudLibrary, we're featuring the literary favorites of Saren, a librarian at our Hamilton Library location.  In addition to her picks, here are a few things about her we thought we'd share with you.

Does reading energize or exhaust you?
Reading has never exhausted me. It inspires me, opens up new ways of thinking, and divulges a characters soul - good and bad.  I can escape reality for a short time, and return whenever I like.

Have you ever had reader's block? (where you went a period of time without reading?)
No reader's block.  Some books are better than others, but it is rare for me not to finish a book.  (Those graphic novels for our reading challenge were pushing the limits for me).  Once you learn what you like to read the door is wide open.

What's your favorite under-appreciated novel?
Favorites I have enjoyed - Burial Rites by Hannah Kent; The Address by Fiona Davis" and Remember Me This Way by Sabine Durrant.

How long have you worked at CPL? In which areas?
I started at CPL in August 1995 so I have been here 22 years.  Started as a Librarian at Downtown,  and now reside at Hamilton.

For more reading recommendations or assistance with downloading e-books from our cloudLibrary, please visit one of our four library locations or call 480-782-2800.
