America in Times of Conflict:
Wartime history and culture programs offered by Chandler Public Library and partners in November
America in Times of Conflict is a collaborative series of panel discussions, exhibits, movies, lectures and performances made possible through a partnership between Chandler Public Library, Chandler Museum, Chandler Senior Center and Chandler Center for the Arts. Running November 2016 through April 2017, its programs explore the stories and perspectives that from our local community during military conflicts in American history, including World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Many of the programs in this project are supported by the Arizona State Library, Archives & Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Chandler Public Library series, America in Times of Conflict, debuts in November featuring speakers, discussion groups, authors and films that explore our country's history and culture during wartime. The programs, offered in collaboration with the Chandler Senior Center, Chandler Museum and Chandler Center for the Arts, will offer regional insights to make the topic more relevant to attendees and will run through April 2017.

The series kicks off on Saturday, Nov. 5, with Courageous Stories of Arizona Military Aviators. This presentation features helicopter pilots who served in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, moderated by Commander Martin Sepulveda, U.S. Navy Reserve, former Chandler City Councilmember and candidate for Congress. The presentation will be held at the Chandler Council Chambers in the City Hall Complex, 175 S. Arizona Avenue, 10 a.m. to noon, in conjunction with the Safety and Veterans Expo.

Library programs paying tribute to veterans and those in military service continue with the Jan Sandwich Show, a musical medley of patriotic songs, at the Chandler Senior Center, 202 E Boston Street, on Monday, Nov. 7, 10-11 a.m.

On Wednesday, Nov. 9, those interested in film and discussion can attend Film + Forum - On Two Fronts: Latinos and Vietnam, sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council. This film is about the Latino experience during the Vietnam War and will be followed by conversation. This program takes place at the Chandler Sunset Library, 4930 W Ray Road, 6-8 p.m.

Hear the vivid and poignant memories of Chandler men who served in World War II through dramatic readings at the program, In My Own Words: Memories of World War II, at the Chandler Hamilton Library on Saturday Nov. 19, 10 a.m. to noon. The readings will be followed by a showing of the 1943 movie, "Guadalcanal Diary," the story of a large U.S. Marines invasion task force bound for Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. This presentation is a partnership between Chandler Public Library and Chandler Museum.

During the month of November, also look for Letters Home, a performance at the Chandler Center for the Arts that puts the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq front and center by bringing to life actual letters written by soldiers serving in the Middle East. This powerful show takes place Nov. 12 with a matinee and evening performance in one of the Center's intimate theaters.

Celebrate Picture Book Month!

While November is officially "Picture Book Month," it really should be celebrated every day, all year long!
Picture books have a particular way of developing a child's critical thinking skills. Their format allows even the youngest child to participate in reading.

Picture books are important for building reading comprehension and developing vocabulary, enabling children to explore the world within their own imagination and make connections to characters and events they see depicted in books.

In a picture book, the illustrations are as important as the text, and both work together to tell the story. They help young children understand that words convey meaning, well before they are aware of the text. Pictures can help increase vocabulary, an important building block for reading. Books can help young children identify colors, shapes, numbers, and letters, as well as names of people, places, animals, and everyday objects.
In addition to our large collection of picture books found in our four locations, you can also find many e-picture books to view on your tablet or mobile device. With your Chandler Public Library card, you can access Tumblebooks or cloudLibrary. We also invite you and your child to a special Harold and the Purple Crayon storytime and craft program at the Chandler Hamilton Library on Saturday, November 12, 2:00 - 3:00pm. Seating is limited and you can register here.

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel.

Do you like to write? Have a story that needs to told? Want to learn how to write the next great novel, or just learn some writing tips? Come join local author, Scott A. Combs, who has published four books this year, for all the secrets to successfully writing a novel. This journey runs through December 3rd and meets every Saturday at Hamilton library. The NaNoWriMo challenge will be explained and you will get to meet other like-minded writers to encourage and motivate each other and of course, write!

The event began in 1999, and in 2005, National Novel Writing Month became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. In 2015, 431,626 participants, including 80,137 students and educators in  the Young Writers Program ,  started the month as auto mechanics, out-of-work actors, and middle school English teachers. They walked away novelists. Over 250 NaNoWriMo novels have been traditionally published. They include Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants, Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus, Hugh Howey's Wool, Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, Jason Hough's The Darwin Elevator, and Marissa Meyer's Cinder.

Looking for:
School Report Resources
Students need reliable resources for their reports. Ordinary websites might not be trustworthy (and teachers often limit the number of websites students can use), the best articles are copyrighted and not available for free online, and the library might not have enough books for every student when they all have the same assignment. What to do? Check out our online research resources! They're free with your library card, and they're available from home even when the library's closed.

Some of our best research resources are Academic One File, Biography in Context, and Student Resources in Context. Student Resources in Context features articles on a wide range of general topics, from social issues to history. If teachers specify that articles from "scholarly journals" are needed, try Academic OneFile and its collection of scholarly titles in fields like science and business. Biography in Context is your best bet for biography reports, with articles from magazines, academic journals, and books all listed together under the name of the person being researched.

To access any of these resources from home, start at  chandlerlibrary.org and hover your mouse over the purple Research & Learning tab. Then click A-Z List of Resources, and scroll down to choose one of our many other resources. You'll need your library card and PIN if you're signing in from home.  Then search for your subject. If you need to know how to write citations for your bibliography or works cited page, look for the "Citation Tools" link on the right side of each article.
